Tomorrow (12 May), on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingalerecognized globally as the founder of modern nursing, International Nurses Day is celebratedto highlight the centrality of the nursing profession within health services.
The slogan chosen this year is We nourish healtha theme that the National Federation of the Order of Nursing Professions wanted to highlight to recall and return to the origin of the meaning of the word nurse, which in English means not only nurse or nurse, but also the newborn’s act of taking milk from the mother’s breast.
“The nurses they play a fundamental role in promoting people’s well-being and ensuring an adequate response to citizens’ health needs – he says Andrea Lenzinidirector of the department of nursing and midwifery professions of the North West Tuscany Local Health Authority – as over the years their contribution has become increasingly irreplaceable. Nurses represent, in synergy with the other healthcare professions with which they collaborate on a daily basis, the lifeblood of the national and regional healthcare service. Thanks to their competence and professionalism, combined with the ability to interpret a constantly developing profession in an increasingly advanced way, today’s nurses continue to be a fundamental reference in the lives of people and patients, since in addition to renewed skills and knowledge acquired thanks to increasingly specialized training courses, nurses today still possess the keys to a fundamental element in internal part of the treatment path: that of the relationship. Even the time dedicated to the relationship is time dedicated to care, and it is precisely from the relationship, from the closeness and listening to the patient, that it becomes possible to intercept the needs and care needs of people, starting from the most fragile ones”.
“For this reason and for the precious work that our colleagues have always carried out with passion and dedication, I would like to extend a special thank you, on behalf of the entire departmentto all 6000 or more nurses of the ASL Tuscany North West, engaged every day in the thirteen hospital establishments and in the ten district areas that refer to our company. From Lunigiana to the Island of Elba, from hospitals to the territories, from local clinics to people’s homes, in ambulances as well as in prisons, our nurses are always present and on the front line to promote and defend the right to health in favor of our entire community, without distinction of ethnicity, language, religion, political opinions, as well as personal and social conditions: a guarantee and protection of the principles of universality, fairness and equality, the same ones that animate and, to return to the theme of the day, fuel the spirit of the entire health service as conceived in its original form”.
