There geomagnetic storm announced a few days ago (with probable repercussions on GPS, communications and electricity networks) gave rise to a color of the sky during the night hours of yesterday that fascinated a large part of Italy, especially in the central regions. From 9pm the phenomenon was also clearly visible in Abruzzo, especially at high altitude and in the absence of light pollution.
There were also many shots from the Vastese area where the sky colored with purple tones by the Northern Lights generated by the solar storm was immortalized from the hinterland to the coast. The phenomenon is similar to the one that occurred in November, but with greater intensity: the phenomenon has been classified as an “extreme geomagnetic storm” (grade G5), to find one of the same power we need to go back twenty-one years, to November 2003.
Among the images that immediately went viral is the iconic one of Giorgi Baldi (and published by L’Aquilano weather), taken from Rocca di Calascio in the direction of Corno Grande. The storm has not ended and in the next few hours there could be other flares visible to the naked eye.
