BOLOGNA – The substitute Pg Nicola Proto, at the end of his indictment, has requested confirmation of the life sentence before the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Bologna for the former National Avant-garde, Paolo Bellini from Reggio Emiliaconvicted at first instance and considered one of the authors of massacre at Bologna station of 2 August 1980, in competition with the former Nar already convicted and with Licio Gelli, Umberto Ortolani, Federico Umberto D’Amato and Mario Tedeschi, all deceased and no longer attributable, but considered instigators, financiers or organizers of the attack.
Bellini, via video link from Spoleto prison, shook his head at the public prosecutor’s request. He has always maintained that he was not the man filmed in the video filmed by German tourist Polzer. Deputy Prosecutor Nicola Proto is convinced of the opposite and in the 6 hours of his indictment reiterated all the elements against Bellini, starting from the “granite proof” (as the Court of Assizes wrote in the reasons for the first degree sentence) of the presence in station of the former National Avant-garde, thanks to the amateur video which portrays a man with his features and which for Bellini’s ex-wife, Maurizia Bonini, is him. The woman, changing her version after forty years and stating that on the morning of August 2 Bellini arrived in Rimini not at 9, but much later, around lunchtime, was decisive in having her ex-wife condemned to ‘life sentence.
“An unspeakable crime” defined it by the deputy Pg, “infested with red herrings”, which prevent the reconstruction of every single role”. The substitute then addressed the relations between Bellini, the subversive right, and the deviant secret services. “A textbook reconstruction” according to the lawyer of the former Pimpernel Antonio Capitelli. The defense requested an expert opinion on the video shot at the station, extrapolating a frame showing a clock of a woman behind the alleged Paolo Bellini: according to Bellini’s lawyers the clock showed 1.15pm and would constitute fundamental evidence capable of exoneration. The prosecution instead claims that that video was shot from a train that had already been moved at that time to allow for rescue operations. Capitelli, together with his colleague Manfredo Fiormonti, will provide his reconstruction in the final speech, scheduled for 5 and 12 June. In the next hearing, scheduled for May 22, he will present the indictment for the other two defendants, then the word will pass to the lawyers of the civil parties.
