The Turin Book Fair opens today, the largest Italian event dedicated to publishing. Until May 13th, at the Lingotto Fiere exhibition center, various events will enliven this 36th edition. The theme that accompanies the event is “Imaginary Life”. And there will also be a lot of Calabria among the protagonists.
At the Turin Book Fair which kicks off today, Calabria intends to play a leading role. Both the Region and other bodies, such as the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, will be present at the international book and publishing exhibition with a significant cultural load. Plus there is the debut of Taurianova Book Capital 2024.
The pavilion of the Calabria Region
They begin with the initiatives promoted by the Calabria Region which offers a rich program that will accompany the public on a journey to the heart of Calabria. In all, 41 publishing houses were hosted (last year there were 32) and 20 Calabrian authors applied individually to participate.

In the over 200 square meters of pavilion there will be a large space for meetings, the bookshop in which each publishing house will have an appropriate personalized place, a corner for listening to audio books, a relaxation area, video walls on which you can follow live meetings and view short videos produced by publishing houses.

A calendar of meetings which will see 85 meetings taking place over the five days of the event with the presence of over 220 authors, publishers, journalists and institutional representatives.
The story of the Book Fair by the students
As already last year, the Via Verdi 11 – Educational Web TV – Association of Locri will take care of the participation of groups of Calabrian and Piedmontese students who will experiment with the filming and TV broadcasting techniques of the scheduled meetings, guided by sector professionals and teachers.
The students of the Web radio and Web TV editorial staff of the “G. Marconi” in Siderno, director Maria Giuliana Fiaschè, will follow the event and create films and interviews with writers and personalities from the literary and cultural scene.
The memory of Saverio Strati on the centenary of his birth
The great Calabrian writer Saverio Strati will be remembered at the Salone on the centenary of his birth with a series of meetings and thematic insights with the contribution of authorities and scholars and men of letters such as Goffredo Fofi, Gioacchino Criaco, Giancarlo Cauteruccio, Giuseppe Polimeni, Luigi Franco, Benedetta Borrata, Mario Musolino, Elisa Chiriano, Luigi Tassoni.
Great space during the days will also be dedicated to the poet Franco Costabile from Lamezia, on the centenary of his birth.
Protagonists: Taurianova Capital of the Book 2024
On the morning of Saturday 11 May there will be space for “Taurianova Book Capital 2024”, the activities planned during the year in the city and in the region will be presented; followed by the young Calabrian Gabriele Vagnato from Viva Rai 2 with Fiorello, at the Book Fair in his Calabria stand he will compare himself with the Calabrian students present.
Guest authors from the Calabria Region
Numerous guest authors: Professor Piergiorgio Odifreddi, the writers Carmine Abate, Angela Bubba, Mario Caligiuri, Gioacchino Criaco, Domenico Dara, Mario Fortunato, Mimmo Gangemi, Raffaele Gaetano, Mauro Francesco Minervino, Tonino Perna, Vito Teti, Giordano Bruno Guerri and Olimpio Talarico. Several Calabrian schools will be present at the Show: the IC Ardito of Lamezia Terme, the Liceo Mazzini of Locri, the Liceo Galilei of Paola, the Liceo Morelli of Vibo Valentia.

The rich program, following the instructions of the vice president of the Calabria Region, was curated by the Education, Training and Equal Opportunities Department, general manager Maria Francesca Gatto, and by the staff of the culture sector, cultural activities, libraries, museums, theaters, high artistic education musical. The Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria will also be present, for the first time, at the Book Fair which kicks off today in Turin. This edition will witness the debut of the organization accompanied, for the occasion, by six esteemed publishing houses in the area.
The occasion is unique and represents an important moment for the promotion of local culture and literary production. The six publishing houses, selected by public notice, will best represent the quality of the metropolitan area’s publishing panorama, bringing with them a vast range of works which, until May 13, will be presented at the institutional stand set up at Lingotto Fiere.
There is a huge program on the calendar with over 30 events organized to present more or less well-known works with the presence of writers, whether debuting or with long careersand authors who, through their works, constitute the literary history of the Reggio area will be explored in depth. Around 50 guests are expected at the Metropolitan City stand for moments of presentation, but also of study and debate. The public will be offered a unique perspective on the cultural richness of the area.
