Livorno, 7 May 2024 – La Porto 2000 is in a state of agitation, proclaimed following the black smoke at the table in the Prefecture on April 23rd between the company and the trade unions Filcams Cgil and Uiltucs Toscana. Therefore the workers will begin the process of mobilization, which will begin with the blocking of overtime work from May 13th and will culminate with the strike for the entire working day scheduled for the 19th, six days later.

“Fortunately, the times of Covid are far away today and industry experts speak of numbers even higher than the 2019 season: above all the cruise sector is the one most affected by comforting growth with MSC as the protagonist. To face such a demanding season, Porto di Livorno 2000 decided to modify the start-up of work and the shifts for workers, even going as far as actually disregarding an important part of the second level agreements, such as the lunch break and the canteen within the shift – the unions say -. A company, in short, which constitutes the business card for those who land in Livorno, but which will show the exhausted faces of the workers who this year will welcome visitors with dull smiles”.

The two acronyms ask for “a completely different and sustainable operational and organizational model, which instead of squeezing workers with exhausting and useless shifts goes in the opposite direction, that is, being able to recover psychophysical energies and guarantee human needs during a hot season in every sense” . “A work organization based solely on profit and attentive only to productivity, which absolutely does not take into account the importance of the physical recovery of workers in a sensitive working context, where the risks linked to health and safety are also high – conclude the Filcams CGIL and Uiltucs Toscana secretariats -. To date, workers have no guarantee of shifts that respect the breaks required by law between one shift and another, nor of being able to consume a decent meal during work shifts that do not provide adequate breaks. We believe that work organization is a central issue for the life of workers and therefore deserves the right discussion, because it is through a healthy work organization that we can also concretely protect the health and safety of workers. If we do not want these issues to remain a pure rhetorical exercise, we need to engage in truly confrontational trade union relations to be able to find prospective solutions that aim at the real well-being of workers”.
