Travel prospects May September 2024

On 11 May, and until 10 September 2024, a new exhibition of contemporary art will open in the rooms of Konnubio, in via dei Conti 8r in Florence, part of the “Visual Taste” project thanks to which Konnubio confirms its dual nature, restaurant and exhibition space. The exhibition – entitled Travel Perspectives, curated by Loredana Barillaro – presents the work of photographer Stefano Ravelli, a selection of photographs taken over the last year in the streets of Florence – the city where he lives and works – and which identify him for his particular nature as a walker photographer. Loredana Barillaro writes: The term perspective is open to multiple interpretations, there is photographic perspective, that is, the depth that the photographer manages to give to the captured image; the architectural perspective, which allows us to understand the depth and three-dimensionality of space, and finally that of the journey, that is, what every single traveler expects from the experience he is having. But to these we can perhaps add another, the perspective of Stefano Ravelli who, when taking to the streets, probably wonders what and who he will encounter, and whether it will be worth using his camera. “Travel perspectives” is essentially this, moving around and in space in search of something, be it a place or an experience. And this is what the artist does, a chase, a capture of a gesture, a step, an interior moment that shines through the gaze of those who are photographed; sometimes a direct look at the camera tells us that there is an involvement on both sides – albeit silent – sometimes, however, the gaze is distracted and directed elsewhere; for Stefano Ravelli it is therefore a matter of observing, of capturing moments of intimacy and introspection. Through the lens the subject of the photo can ideally meet whoever will be the observer, inviting him to enter his world, into the perimeter of the printed surface, to become part of it. The human figure marries the architecture, follows its lines and imitates its poses as if to redesign its structure, women and men become columns or pillars, in an identification with the space that only the photographer is able to perceive and capture, delivering the subject to a here and now and perhaps to an forever. And black and white requires an effort of imagination, the color of the clothes, of the eyes, of the sky, we are not always allowed to guess the moment of the shot. Why does Stefano Ravelli love photographing people on the street? Why did he choose this genre? Ultimately he defines himself as a “walker photographer” who is characterized by curiosity, by the need to explore, to discover, to look, but also to listen. We will never know who these travelers are, we can only hypothesize their stories, their names, the thoughts in which they are immersed while Stefano quickly immortalizes them. Sometimes the artist surprises passers-by in the act of photographing themselves, and more and more often it is an action carried out in a compulsive, fast manner, basically trying to grab as much as possible, as many things as we can store so that nothing escapes us. But this speed of gesture sometimes gives way to concentration, to silence, to that stillness so necessary to understand the meaning of what is in front of you. Stefano Ravelli shoots at the center of the chaos, of the frenetic chatter in which a thousand and more voices coming from everywhere intersect and mix, despite this what transpires is the inevitable calmness of a scene stopped forever, of the silence that finally shines through. Only the sense of sight is called into question, everything else, the before and after, we can only imagine.
