The sources and spoils of Siena are at the center of a new exhibition at the Santa Maria della Scala: it is entitled “To find Diana” and tells the story of underground Siena through the eyes of Sienese school students. The exhibition, scheduled from Thursday 9th to Saturday 18th May in the San Galgano room of the museum, is organized by the cultural association La Diana odv of Siena which for years has been showcasing the works created by students of Sienese schools.

The exhibition on the Bottini of Siena is in fact part of the “Siena and water” project, in which students from primary and secondary schools in Siena and its province participated. The journey started from the lessons of the volunteers of the La Diana association in schools about the origins of the Sienese territory and its geological peculiarities; the search for water; the Sienese Bottini system and the city sources; the management of water resources. Furthermore, the children were accompanied to discover the Fonte delle Monache and the Bottino maestro of Fonte Gaia, as well as the Water Museum and the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex. These experiences became the protagonists of the works created by the children during the educational activities carried out with the volunteers.

The thematic itinerary is divided into pictorial works, models, posters and objects relating to the Sienese territory, the spoils, the sources and daily life, with a recreational section and one dedicated to the texts. The aim is to encourage young people to pay greater attention to the issue of water and its correct use and to make known and appreciated the priceless historical architectural heritage of the city linked to water.

Siena and water will also be protagonists of the Night of the Museums scheduled for Saturday 18 May, when the museum itinerary of the Santa Maria della Scala, the National Archaeological Museum and the Giuliano Briganti Library will remain open on an extraordinary basis until midnight. And precisely on the occasion of the Night of the Museums it will therefore be possible to take part, by reservation, in one of the two free guided tours of the water routes, which will start at 7pm and 9pm. Not only that, the initiatives on 18 May also include a guided tour free at the exhibition “Book object. International biennial of artists’ and design books – Siena special edition” starting at 9.30 pm.

To participate in the guided tours you can send an email to [email protected].
