The Municipality of Imola confers honorary citizenship on Julian Assange

Julian Assange, co-founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, received honorary citizenship of Imola in recognition of his personal and professional courage in affirming the principles of transparency and freedom of the press. The ceremony was held during a public meeting he attended John Shipton, Assange’s father.

The motivation for the recognition was described as a tribute to the “personal and professional courage demonstrated in the commitment to affirm the principle of transparency, which every form of exercise of public power must be inspired by, and the principles of freedom of the press and free demonstration , cornerstones of our system and therefore of our community.”

John Shipton expressed gratitude to the municipal administration and underlined the symbolic value of the gesture. During the ceremony, the vice mayor Fabrizio Castellari he delivered the parchment on behalf of the city of Imola, declaring: “Assange is a great witness of our time. His light is alive even behind the bars of inhumane detention.”
