Her case began to arouse particular interest on a global level when, on April 21, 2024, 60-year-old Alejandra Rodriguez paraded in Buenos Aires alongside girls of around taking home the title of Argentine Miss Universe. In a new interview given to “Repubblica”, Alejandra wanted to talk about her thoughts on what happened and the message that, with her victory, she would like to spread.
Pushed to participate in the beauty contest by a friend, the lawyer and journalist talks about how the elimination of the age limits and physical requirements previously required certainly influenced her participation, and the consequent achievement of the title. «The prize received, as well as the contest’s decision to change the rules, indicate that society is ready for new standards of beauty, more inclusive and less responsive to stereotypes» claims the woman, who claims to have been the first to have many doubts about their participation due to a deep-rooted social prejudice about age. «But I also really wanted to try something new and so I took courage with both hands. And in the end I won »she underlines then her.
Without hiding the fact that we want to win the general competition, to the question “What message does this victory bring?” Alejandra replies firmly: «The message lies in the responses of many people who write to me». «They say they didn’t dare do certain things because of their age and my example serves as inspiration» she states, «So that age is not a limit. So that age stereotypes that predict that you, with that number, must behave in a certain way and avoid certain things are overcome. This also applies to work: there are jobs that if you are 45-50 years old you already cannot access. The message is therefore a message of inclusion with respect to age, which is often a topic that remains outside of major debates on inclusion.”
