Journey Thompson Transfers to Syracuse

Journey Thompson, a 6-foot-3 forward, has decided to transfer to Syracuse for the 2024-25 season and with two years of eligibility remaining. The McMurray, Pa., native she spent her first two collegiate seasons at Arizona State. Thompson is the first transfer to sign with the Orange out of the portal this season.

“Journey is a great get for our women’s basketball family,” Syracuse head coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. “Rebounds, runs and finishing through contact are a few tangibles that come to mind right away. She is a character young lady with an incredible family. We are blessed to have Journey join our Orange family. Orange Nation, please show Journey our orange love .”

Thompson was sidelined with an injury 13 games into her freshman season in which she was averaging 3.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. She shot 43.6 percent from the field in 11.1 minutes per game before the season was cut short.

As a sophomore, she started in 25 games and appeared in all 31 for the Sun Devils. In 21.1 minutes per game, Thompson averaged 5.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while shooting 34.7 percent from the field. She was one of four players to appear in all 31 games and led the team in rebounds, offensive rebounds (1.8 per game), and blocks (0.6 bpg). She was tied for third on the squad in steals and was the fifth leading scorer.

A 2022 Third-Team All-State honoree by the Pennsylvania Sports Writers, Thompson averaged 16.2 points per game and led Peters Township High School to the quarterfinals for the WPIAL Class 6A girls’ basketball tournament. As a freshman, Peters Township went undefeated (30-0) to win the WPIAL and PIAA Class 6A titles.

Thompson was a well-decorated athlete in high school, earning Post Gazette Athlete of the Week, as well as Observer-Reporter All-District Team, Miss PA Basketball Nominee, Big 56 Conference 6A First Team and PA Future Stars Elite 8.

She adds depth to the Orange front court which returns rising seniors Kyra Wood, Sania Wilson and graduate student Izabel Varejão.
