TREVISO – Opening to honorary citizenship to Giacomo Matteotti And new license plate to put in the homonym square instead of the one that has been present for decades but with a tacky look mistake that the time has now come correct: that “Mateotti” written with three “ts” instead of four can no longer be seen. The mayor Mario Conteon the centenary of the murder by the fascists of the socialist political journalist (which took place on 10 June 1924), puts on the table two initiatives concrete: one political and the other more practical.

«I have nothing against conferring honorary citizenship on Giacomo Matteotti, a very important figure who Treviso already honors by having a square named after him. But I want that request is discussed and approved by the group leaders in the City Council because there must be unity.” Conte therefore opens up to the proposal put forward during the last municipal council by Franco Rosi (Treviso Civica) who asked to grant the highest citizen recognition to the socialist politician victim of the fascists and became an emblem of the opposition to the regime Mussolini. Same request also made by Luigi Calesso of Coalition Civica.

Last Tuesday at Palazzo dei Trecento, Rosi, after praising the speech given by the mayor in the square on April 25th – «Thank you for wanting April 25th to truly be everyone’s day», he recalled – arrived at the request: «This This year marks the centenary of the massacre of Giacomo Matteotti. Mayor, to you who in your speech of 25 April mentioned Pertini, the partisan Eros and Matteotti himself, I ask the latter to be granted honorary citizenship”. And Conte doesn’t hold back: «For my part there are no obstacles – he repeats – but now the group leaders have to discuss it because it is an important proposal. However, Treviso already honors Matteotti in an important way.”

Rosi’s proposal arrives at Ca’ Sugana at the same time as the motion presented by Antonella Tocchetto (Pd) which instead has as its objective remove honorary citizenship own to Mussolini. Moreover, the hypothesis of granting it to Matteotti without first taking it away from the Duce – who in 1925 in front of the Chamber of Deputies publicly assumed the “political, moral and historical responsibility” for the climate in which the assassination had occurred – would create a paradox not recently.

IN THE SQUARE

And while a political discussion with predictably heated tones looms on the horizon, the mayor also announces that he has finally taken the issue of plate dedicated to the politician victim of fascism which however distorts his name. For decades the problem has been ignored by the various municipal councils but the occasion of the centenary of Matteotti’s death seems the right time to remedy it: «I have given instructions to order a new plaque to be placed in Piazza Matteotti – announces Conte – there has been that inscription with the error for too many years, we’re talking about decades. There will be a bureaucratic process to follow, we will also talk to the Superintendence. But we want to fix it. And I thank all the citizens who reported the error to me.”
