Judge Ottavio Sferlazza will talk about Rosario Livatino at the “Alessandro Volta” scientific high school in Caltanissetta. A long-time magistrate, recently retired, he will in fact be the prestigious speaker at the meeting entitled “Sub tutela dei”. The event will be held in the library room on Thursday 16 May (at 4.30 pm). The work will be coordinated by Professor Alessandra Giunta, professor of Law and Instrumental Function for the Teaching of Civic Education.
Judge Ottavio Sferlazza will deal with “the particular conception of justice advocated by the Canicattinese judge Rosario Livatino, murdered at the age of just 38 near Agrigento on 21 September 1990”.
As you will remember, Rosario Livatino was the first magistrate beatified by the Catholic Church, after a long journey that began in 1993 (it ended in 2021).
Judge Sferlazza, who I had the honor of interviewing years ago, was a magistrate on the front line, between Sicily and Calabria. A long and prestigious career. A magistrate who concluded his professional experience about four years ago, as chief prosecutor of the Republic of Palmi.

Sferlazza was deputy prosecutor at the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Caltanissetta. He directed the investigation into the murder of judge Rosario Livatino. He had the opportunity to get to know deeply the exemplary figure of the young magistrate from Canicattino. He was also president of the Court of Assizes of Caltanissetta (in that period, I had the opportunity to interview him), supervising the hearing for the Capaci massacre (the judge Falcone, his wife and his escort died).
Sferlazza, retired, is currently president of the Ethics Committee of the Libera association. And he consistently dedicates himself to public training events. For the sake of completeness, we remember that he was also president of the Court of Assizes which judged the instigators and material executors of the massacre in Via Pipitone Federico, in which the investigating councilor Rocco Chinnici was killed and the murder of judge Antonino Saetta and his son Stefano.
So, afternoon appointment for May 16th at the “Alessandro Volta” scientific high school. The school director, Vito Parisi, opened this important event to the public, “due to its profound civic value”.
