Bergamo. TO Monte Palace the meeting took place on Thursday evening (23 May). “The Europe that serves”a round table organized by the Bergamo Masters of Labor Federation and the Soroptimist International Club of Bergamo.

After the greetings of the Provincial Consul of the Masters of Labor Alberto Caldara and the President of the Soroptimist International Club of Bergamo Erina Gambarini, the young musicians of the Bariano Brass Band sang Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, the European anthem since 1972 for his music is a symbol of peace and brotherhood between peoples.

Speakers included Senator Gilberto Bonalumi, former Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the Goria and De Mita governments; the Honorable Pia Locatelli, former Member of the Italian and European Parliaments and Dr. Nicoletta Morelli, notary and former member of the Statutes and Regulations Commission of the European Union Soroptimist Club International.

Starting from the values ​​and principles that first animated the drafting of the Ventotene Manifesto and the declaration of the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman of 9 May 1950, in which the idea of ​​an economically and politically united Europe took shape; the guests of the round table also touched on the challenges facing the Union today.

The most urgent, and short-term, is that of popular involvement, especially young people, in European issues and policies. In this regard, the Honorable Locatelli and Dr. Morelli explained how the processes underlying the political decisions that are taken in European legislative bodies are structured.

Finally, there was an interlude dedicated to the relationship between Bergamo and the European Union. The city, which already boasts in its airport and city university two infrastructures and institutions of strategic importance on European territory, was selected together with 100 other European cities – 8 Italian – to carry out the EU mission on smart cities and with zero climate impact by 2030.

Bonalumi and Locatelli also underlined how the response of the entire Bergamo area to the pandemic in 2020 showed how those values ​​that started the process of European unification seventy years ago live in the city. At the end of the evening Giovanna Terzi Bosatelli brought the final greetings to the audience present.
