”Trees cut down by a left that chained itself for them”

A meeting with the citizens of the San Lazzaro neighborhood and a trip to the Coni-Santa Rosa sports field, to collect reports and proposals from citizens. This morning Senator Adriana Poli Bortone, candidate for mayor of Lecce for the centre-right, continued her listening tour in two other strategic areas of the city.

Broken pavements, dangerous intersections (especially the one between via Regina Elena and via Catalani) and many other shortcomings have been reported by those who live and work in San Lazzaro, a residential neighborhood a stone’s throw from the center, which shows signs of neglect in recent years.

”Traders complain a lot about the new arrangement of the little square which may be aesthetically nice, but it has had and continues to have a devastating impact on trade – says Adriana Poli Bortone -. It seems that in this city, in the center as well as on the outskirts, there has been a ferocity against traders on the part of the Administration. On the other hand, residents complain about the massacre of trees. In fact, for a few weeks now, interventions have been underway to cut down the pine trees considered dangerous, practically the vast majority of the trees present in the area which have always characterized it”.

”I want to remember that when, twenty years ago, I was in government of the city and we had to proceed with the felling of the pine trees in Viale dell’Università – he highlights – there were exponents of the left who chained themselves to the trees, as a sign of protest . Here I didn’t see chains but I saw that many trees were cut down, without a single shot being fired. I at least hope that the trunks are cut appropriately, because in the state in which we see them now, there is a risk of tripping and above all, I hope that new plants that are not as invasive as the pines are planted and that they are watered, cared for and pruned to perfection. And to these factors that worsen the quality of life in the neighborhood is added what is now a constant that reigns supreme wherever we go – adds the centre-right candidate – the lack of listening by the municipal administrators”.

”And this is also a determining factor because it is the real link that connects those who administer with the community. And I believe that the citizens of Lecce will be happy to build together with me, with all of us, a program that we will present to the citizens in the next few days, as soon as we file the lists of candidates for the June elections. A program based on the active participation of all categories of workers and citizens.

As for the inspection of the Coni field, the centre-right candidate Adriana Poli Bortone explains that ”she found athletics tracks that were not passable, torn playing field nets, different types of dangers, even ditches. The area which, some time ago, was handed over by the Cavalry School has become full of grass as tall as a wheat field and poppies can be picked there, but absolutely nothing can be done for the rest. Cleaning and tidying up will entail a very, very important financial commitment for the Municipality, and it will be necessary to take steps to obtain ad hoc funding”.
