3.40pm Coach Pelino’s “Blue Team” will now be able to focus with less tension on the match against South Korea, thinking only of winning to try to obtain promotion to the Top Division.

3.35pm Friends, the first news: by virtue of the 4-2 inflicted by Romania on Japan, Italy has the arithmetic certainty of having already achieved salvation.

Good afternoon friends of OA Sport and welcome to the LIVE text of Italy-South Korea, a match valid for the fifth and final day of the First Division of the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championships.

Against the Asians, coach Pelino’s “Blue Team” is playing for everything: either an incredible chance of promotion to the Top Division or a sensational splash in the Second Division. Italy is currently at 6 points, together with Romania (but at a disadvantage in the direct clashes with the Azzurri), Slovenia at 9 is already certain of promotion, while Hungary at 8 does not want to waste its chance. Italy qualifies for the Top Division if:

  • Wins against South Korea in regular time and Hungary loses in regular time against Slovenia, already promoted (Italy 9, Hungary 8: Romania’s result is irrelevant, however behind Italy as they were defeated by the Azzurri in the direct clash ).
  • Wins against South Korea in regulation time, Hungary loses in extra time or on penalties against Slovenia, already promoted, and Romania wins in regulation time against Japan (Italy, Romania and Hungary at 9: Italy promoted for the ranking avulsa).
  • Wins against South Korea in extra time or on penalties, Hungary loses in regulation time against Slovenia, already promoted, and Romania wins in extra time or on penalties against Japan (Italy, Romania and Hungary at 8: Italy promoted by the separate ranking).

If, however, Italy, Korea and Japan all finished 6th at the bottom of the general rankings of these First Division World Cups, Italy would be relegated by virtue of the separate rankings. For this to happen, Italy would have to lose in the 60 minutes of regulation against South Korea, who would then gain the advantage against the Azzurri, while Japan would have to win in overtime against Romania; and even in that case, given that the Japanese beat the Koreans, a disadvantageous situation would be created for Italy.

Let’s remember the time of the three matches on the agenda today: 12.30pm Romania-Japan, 4.00pm Italy-South Korea, 7.30pm Hungary-Slovenia.

OA Sport offers you the LIVE text of Italy-South Korea, fifth day of the First Division of the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championships. The first puck of the match will move at 4.00 pm at the “Sparkasse Arena” in Bolzano which will try to push the Azzurri towards victory. Have fun with our real-time news.
