The flag ofEuropean Union flutters on stage Town Hall Square together with the banners of the confederal unions. On the first Neapolitan May of CGIL CISL and UIL the focus is on the upcoming continental elections so that we can work towards a Europe of peace.

«What we want is not the Europe of banks, of austerity, but a social Europe, a Europe that puts work, rights and people at the centre» explains the general secretary of the Uil of Naples and Campania, Giovanni Sgambatiat the end of the sit-in which also saw the participation of a pensioner, an Ikea worker and a worker from the energy department.

«Today we are in the streets with a single objective – he specifies Melicia ComberiatiCISL secretariat of Naples – to promote, through a great social pact, true political, social and economic integration, with a Europe of solidarity at its centre, which in turn places, above all, human capital, work, the dignity of Work”.

«It is no coincidence that together with CISL and UIL we have found this balance on the issues of work, peace and social justice – clarifies the general secretary of CGIL Napoli and Campania, Nicola Ricci – because we think that in this country while rights are under attack, the world of work must also be defended at a European level. On the social justice front, Naples is a city that has many unexpressed and few protected rights, starting with precariousness. While some delicate disputes such as Whirlpool and Ipercoop have been resolved in recent months, many still need to be addressed if there is even a possibility of a positive resolution. This is why we will always be in the streets like this May 1st in defense of workers, young people, pensioners and above all women, because female unemployment is a great emergency in our city.”

The mayor of Naples also arrives in the square, Gaetano Manfredi, who during his speech, on the stage a few steps away from Palazzo San Giacomo, addresses the age-old issue of underpaid work, a real drama for those who live in the regional capital: «Our Constitution says that the Republic is founded about work, but an adjective should be added to the word work. You should have a fair, equitable, safe job. Even today we have workers who have starvation wages, have an unacceptable precarious situation and risk their lives to bring their wages home. And this is not acceptable.”

The mayor then recalls the importance of unity of purpose: «The political and trade union forces – concludes Manfredi – must be together to give a future of hope. Today we talk about the future and our future is to have a fair wage.”
