Legnano, over five hundred for Maddalena di Canossa

Celebrated with Monsignor Delpini the 250th anniversary of the birth of Saint Magdalene of Canossa

Legnano – The archbishop of Milan Monsignor Mario Delpini on the afternoon of Wednesday 15 May he returned to Legnano. After the pastoral visit last February, this time to celebrate a special occasion: the 250th anniversary of the birth of Saint Magdalene of Canossa, the religious native of Verona and canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II. In Legnano her work is present at the Institute that bears the name of her and her, where already in 2021 Delpini had celebrated the school’s 170 years of activity.

The holy Mass, commissioned by the Canossian Mothers of the “Barbara Melzi” Institute of Legnano was held in one Church of the Redeemer of Legnarello packed in every row of seats, 500 faithful in prayer, among them also the students of the Legnano Institute from little ones to high school students. A solemn function, which lasted almost two hours, and was concelebrated by Monsignor Delpini together with the parish priest Don Stefano Valsecchi and the Provost and Dean of Legnano Monsignor Angelo Cairati and all the parish priests of the Legnano parishes. Also present among the civil and military authorities were Councilor Bragato and the President of the Legnanese Family Gianfranco Bononi.

The homily

During the homily, the Archbishop of Milan recalled the figure of Magdalene of Canossa which one founder of the Daughters and Sons of Charity, beatified in 1941 and proclaimed a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1988 and of Barbara Melzi who decided to follow in his footsteps by taking vows and founding a school in the Legnanello district of Legnanello in 1850. School, catechesis, assistance to the sick in hospitals, training of teachers. The commitment of Saint Magdalene of Canossa to the service of God and others was multifaceted and found loving and complete expression with the foundation of the Sisters of Charity, also called Canossian Sisters, which took place in 1808. “An intelligent woman, a courageous woman, who believed in a possible humanity, rediscovering the wonder of Christian originality, interpreter of a story of extraordinary charity”.
