Bad weather, submerged fields and haywire sowing:
in the province of Pavia, barley, corn and rice are at risk
Barley and wheat at risk of asphyxiation and strong fears for the sowing of corn and rice, while entire meadows have been damaged by too much rain. This is what emerges from a monitoring by Coldiretti Pavia in the countryside submerged in water due to the new wave of bad weather that is affecting the territory and which risks leaving irreparable damage in the fields of the first rice-growing province in Europe.
The situation is very difficult throughout Lombardy – specifies Coldiretti – where in some areas there have already been over 100 millimeters of cumulative rainfall in the last 12 hours according to Arpa data and the surveys carried out by the farmers themselves. Delays in operations in the countryside are recorded throughout the Pavia area, from the hills (where rainfall forces farmers to postpone the harvesting of fodder ready to be cut) to the plains, where farms are forced to delay the sowing of corn and of rice where these have not yet been made.
In particular, in the province of Pavia – continues Coldiretti – the new wave of bad weather aggravates the delay in rice sowing. Due to the continuous rains, in fact, the tractors are unable to enter the field for the necessary work, and this could lead to both a postponement of the harvests and a decrease in the hectares cultivated. If the adverse weather conditions continue – underlines Coldiretti – farmers will not be able to work and sow the rice fields in time and will be forced to change cultivation, with negative consequences also in terms of profitability.
“First the drought, then the incessant rains: the climate emergency continues to affect agriculture and complicates the situation of harvests and sowing – declares Silvia Garavaglia, President of Coldiretti Pavia – On the one hand the risk of asphyxiation for the sown crops, on the other, the impossibility of adequately planning new sowings. This situation demonstrates how the current CAP, which clashes with a disastrous climate reality, is today difficult to implement: it is necessary to intervene promptly to adapt it to the real needs of our businesses”.
Faced with these events – underlines Coldiretti – it seems clear that we are faced with the consequences of climate change also in Italy, where the exceptional nature of atmospheric events is now the norm and with a tendency towards tropicalization which – concludes Coldiretti – manifests itself with a higher frequency of violent demonstrations, seasonal shifts, short and intense rainfall and the rapid transition from sunny to bad weather, with significant temperature changes that compromise crops in the fields with losses in national agricultural production and damage to structures and infrastructures in the countryside.
