The so-called “Breakfast Directive” ensures greater protection of national honey production but on juices and jams, yet another opportunity has been missed to ensure greater transparency for citizens, especially in a sector that sees young generations as its primary consumers. To affirm it is Coldiretti Cuneo in commenting on the definitive green light from the member states, during the EU Agriculture Council, to the agreement reached with the European Parliament on the new rules.

The Breakfast Directive, as requested by Coldiretti, will more effectively combat imports of adulterated honey from third countries throughmandatory and clearly visible labeling of the country of origin. An important novelty in a situation in which the unfair import of poor quality products at rock-bottom prices from abroad – over 25 million kilos arriving in 2023 alone – is ruining Cuneo and Italian honey.

In the agreement, however, the obligation of the mandatory indication of the origin of the raw material for fruit juices, jams and marmalades, initially inserted under pressure from Coldiretti, was removed. “A step backwards towards the protection of freedom of choice and the defense of the health of European citizens, starting from the youngest ones, only partially compensated by clearer indications on the sugar content in juices and the minimum fruit content in jams and marmalades ” comments the President of Coldiretti Cuneo, Enrico Nadawho adds: “Precisely to bring the EU to change direction in citizen protection policies, we have launched a major mobilization from Brenner on the transparency of what we bring to the table”.

“The objective is to collect one million signatures for a popular initiative European law proposal that would make it mandatory to indicate the origin on the label of all food products on the market in Europe” explains the Director of Coldiretti Cuneo, Fabiano Porcu. The theme will be among those at the center of the assemblies that Coldiretti has organized for today, Tuesday 30 April, throughout the national territory. At provincial level, hundreds of Coldiretti member managers are expected today, starting from 7.30 pm, at the “Giardino dei Tigli” hotel in the Cussanio hamlet of Fossano, with the President Enrico Nada, the Director Fabiano Porcu and the participation of the CEO of Filiera Italia, Luigi Scordamaglia.
