Luca, overwhelmed by the ground on the Lucca construction site: that time he averted the dismissal of a young worker

Repubblica dedicates a fixed space to deaths at work. A Spoon River that tells the story of each victim’s life, preventing them from turning into banal statistical data. Invisible and forgotten lives. In our country an average of three workers a day do not return home and “Dying at Work” aims to be an uninterrupted reminder to institutions and politics until this “crime of peace” ends.

Viola, two years old, is called that not only because it is a beautiful name. A flower. Viola is called this because the Florentine was one of her father Luca’s great passions. Football, also played, go-karting, the house where in the garden he built a wooden castle for the children, Viola and her five-year-old brother, passions linked by the love for the family and for the work that regulates and supports the lives of all of us. Luca Giannecchi, 51 years old, died in an excavation on the road construction site of Sant’Alessio, on the outskirts of Lucca: the collapse of the ground overwhelmed him, there was nothing that could be done despite the rescue efforts. His wife Lucia told the local press an episode that is worth more than a hundred-page biography: “A young man, with a six-month fixed-term contract, hit him with the truck and he was wrong. He got out of the vehicle and, in tears, told Luca that they would fire him. Then my husband called his company taking the blame so as not to make that young man who he didn’t even know lose his job. And he paid the damages on his behalf ”. Luca, a worker who died at work.
