Origin Italia is growing: the Consortium for the protection of PGI Clementines from the Gulf of Taranto joins the Association

Following the publication in the European Journal of the Community GI reform, the PGI Clementine del Golfo di Taranto protection consortium becomes part of Origin Italia, the Italian Association of Geographical Indication Consortia, which thus comes to represent 79 protection consortia, a sector association and well over 95% of Italian Geographical Indications. An important entry, that of the Apulian GI, which means a further strengthening of the positioning of Origin Italia, a point of reference for Italian GI products.

Clementines from the Gulf of Taranto PGI are the fresh fruits obtained from the Citrus clementine Hort species. ex Tanaka, in the varieties Comune, Fedele, Precoce di Massafra or Spinoso, Grosso Puglia, ISA, SRA 63, SRA 89. The production area of ​​Clementine del Golfo di Taranto PGI includes the entire territory of the municipalities of Palagiano, Massafra, Ginosa , Castellaneta, Palagianello, Taranto and Statte, in the province of Taranto, in the Puglia region. Clementines del Golfo di Taranto PGI are characterized by their spheroidal shape, with slightly flattened poles; smooth or slightly wrinkled skin, orange in color, with a maximum of 30% green color. The fruit is seedless, with a tolerance of 5% of fruits containing a maximum of three seeds. Their diffusion in the Taranto area dates back to the 18th century. After the Second World War, thanks to the Land Reform, which allowed adequate water resources to be made available to farmers, there was an expansion and specialization of citrus cultivation in the Gulf of Taranto area, allowing it to take on the connotation of a pre-eminent crop in the area.
