Palermo was starting to get serious. On 29 August 2023, the rosanero, on the third day of the Serie B championship, faced Reggiana away. Corini’s team managed to obtain a good victory, the first of three in a row (victories against FeralpiSalò and Ascoli followed).
Palermo immediately started off on the right foot and took the lead after just 7 minutes: Insigne took the task of taking a corner kick and with his polite left foot he delivered a splendid cross to the far post where Lund masterfully volleyed home his finish. seems destined to score but a Reggiana defender saves on the line, at which point the quickest on the rebound is Lucioni who kicks with a sure shot with his left foot; the ball is once again blocked by the Reggiana defenders but after a VAR consultation the referee awards the goal to the rosanero. In the 42nd minute, a key episode of the match: Segre runs away towards the opponent’s goal, Reggiana’s defense is completely unbalanced and Marcandalli brings down Palermo’s number 8 right on the edge of the penalty area. The match director sends off the Reggiana player for a clear scoring opportunity.
At 18′ of the second half following a corner kick Lanini he finds himself completely alone in the penalty area and easily turns the ball into the net, thus giving Reggiana the equalizer. Eight minutes later, however, Palermo is ahead again: Insigne finds Di Mariano with a nice through ball from the opposite side who draws an interesting cross with his left foot to the far post where he pounces Secrets which he heads into the net. Palermo sensationally missed the third goal with Aurelio but in the fifth minute of injury time managed to definitively close the score with a great header from Soleri who anticipates everyone at the near post on Valente’s cut cross.
Eugenio Corini’s rosanero, after this away victory, were at ninth place with 4 points (with one game less, the recovery against Brescia), close to the playoff zone. Reggiana was in 18th with just one point after three games. Today, after 34 days of the championship, Palermo is in sixth place at 52 points, five less than Catanzaro who is fifth in the standings (who however has one game more). Reggiana, on the other hand, is in 13th place with 40 points, four more than the playout zone.
