Today, throughout the country, marks the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the entire national territory from the occupation of the Axis forces, as a result of the unanimous commitment of many members of the Italian Armed Forces to the Resistance and the War of Liberation, events which they led, in Italy, to the end of the Second World War and the Nazi-fascist domination, confirming, under a single flag, the newfound national unity.
The day of 25 April was chosen in memory of 25 April 1945, the day on which the order of general insurrection in all the territories of the State occupied by the fascist regimes was issued by the National Committee of Liberation of Northern Italy and became a symbol of the fight against tyranny while affirming, at the same time, the great desire for material and social reconstruction, to which all the country’s institutions contributed synergistically.
Also in Cosenza, this morning, in Piazza della Vittoria, the usual military ceremony took place in the presence of the city’s highest military and civil authorities and representatives of all the military and combat associations and a large representation of educational institutions of the city.
Present were the Prefect SE Vittoria CIARAMELLA, highest authority and representative of the Government, the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, Col. Agatino Saverio SPOTO, the Vicar of the Police Commissioner, First Director Ferruccio MARTUCCI, the Commander of the Economic and Financial Police Unit of the Guardia di Finance, Lt. Col. Gennaro GARZELLA, the Commander of the Detachment of the 1st Bersaglieri Regiment, Lt. Col. Gianluca BERARDI, as well as all the provincial representatives of the other Armed Forces, of the Fire Brigade, of the Penitentiary Police and of the local police, of the Italian Red Cross.
Also present at the ceremony were the Superintendent of Studies of Cosenza, Professor Loredana GIANNICOLA, the Magnificent Rector of the University of Calabria, Professor Nicola LEONE, the Mayor of Cosenza, Lawyer Franz CARUSO together with a representative of the municipal administration of Cosenza.
The ceremony began with the deployment of an armed joint force formation made up of soldiers from all the Armed Forces – Carabinieri, Army with the Bersaglieri of the 1st Regiment, Navy of the Port Authority of Corigliano-Rossano, Air Force of the detachment of Montescuro – of the State Police and the State Civil Corps, the Penitentiary Police, together with units of the Fire Brigade, the Italian Red Cross and the Volunteer Corps. The participation of the combatant associations with their banners, the Municipality and the Province of Cosenza with their respective banners was choral.
Following this, honors were paid to the Prefect of Cosenza, Vittoria CIARAMELLA, who, accompanied by the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, representative of the Armed Forces, first reviewed the armed departments to the tune of the “Fedelissima” and then attended the traditional ceremony of ‘flag raising, marked by the notes of the “Mameli Hymn”. This will be followed by the solemn reading of the message from the Minister of Defense Guido CROSETTO.
The “March of the Piave” and the “Silence of Ordinance” therefore served as the backdrop to the deposition of a laurel wreath at the War Memorial, a dutiful and grateful homage to the memory of those, military and civilian, who sacrificed one’s life and one’s affections for the reconquest of every form of social, ethical and political freedom and for the affirmation of the rule of law, of the Italian Republic and its Constitution.
