WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – Tourism councilor Alessandro Anello met in Washington, on behalf of the municipal administration of Palermo, Michael Polo and Shayla Kaestle, president and director of the Osdia association (Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America), the largest organization in the United States to support Italian descendants, founded in 1905 by a doctor from Polizzi Generosa, Vincenzo Sellaro, as a mutual aid society for the first Italians in New York.
“Palermo has a very strong bond with the United States – explains Anello -. It was precisely in the Sicilian capital that, after Rome, the second section of Osdia outside North American territory in over one hundred years of history was established. Tiberio Mantia presides over it and together with the partners on May 23, in Washington, they will promote Palermo and Sicily in a gala evening at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center where our beauties will be celebrated as part of the year of Italian roots in world with important repercussions on tourism”.
Among the various Italian-American organizations, Osdia is the one that most represents the over 26 million fellow citizens in the United States. “For this reason, in agreement with Mayor Lagalla – continues the councilor -, I have started a collaborative process with the leaders of the association to promote from a tourist perspective everything attractive that Palermo can offer from a historical point of view, cultural, naturalistic, religious, entrepreneurial and food and wine. At the beginning of May we will host President Polo and Director Kaestle in Palermo together with a delegation of Italian-Americans to establish a synergy that develops the city’s cultural and social relations with the Italian-American communities, and economic relations, in particular planning tourism promotion initiatives to attract new flows of travelers from North America, especially during the low season”.
“In the meantime we have already accepted the proposal to finance the redevelopment of an area of the city with the association’s funds. A first tangible sign of collaboration in the name of a common identity”, concludes Anello.
