He dedicated his life to photography, arriving in Campania twice. This is how the Sicilian is remembered Giuseppe Leonerecently deceased: friend and traveling companion of writers such as Leonardo Sciascia, Gesualdo Bufalino and Vincenzo Consolo, he talked about beauty in around 70 publications with the most important Italian publishing houses.
Among these, a volume dedicated to Campania, produced by the Sorrento Peninsula Prize for a special artistic residency project (directed by its namesake Peppe Leone, a Samnite artist) started from Correale museum of Sorrento and unfolded between the sites Pompeii, Naples, Paestum, Salerno, Benevento, Buonassociazione, Teggiano and Procida, in the year of the Italian capital of culture. With a selection of black and white images, published by Plumelia Edizioni (preface by Concetto Prestifilippo and Mario Casillo), with the patronage of the Campania Region, an exhibition was also set up, hosted in the archive rooms of the Banco di Napoli Foundation. At the center are little-known landscapes and hidden places, but also famous monuments in the footsteps of the Grand Tour.
«Giuseppe Leone – recalls the director of the Sorrento Peninsula Prize, Mario Esposito – he traveled the world always carrying his camera with him, a sort of Mediterranean lantern. In this human and artistic journey Campania also finds light and voice through its immortal films. We won’t forget it.”
