Fourth Polyclinic, one point in the capital of Nisseno

CALTANISSETTA – New chapter in dispute between Caltanissetta and Enna for the birth in the city of fourth Polyclinic in Sicily with the news of the publication in the Official Journal of the agreement between the Region and the University of Palermo. Thanks to the agreement, the University of Palermo will be able to manage 350 beds at the Sant’Elia hospital – already Level II DEA – thus going from the current 470 to 820.

“With this agreement – he explains Massimo Midiri, rector of the University of Palermo – the beds at Sant’Elia are therefore functionally included in the university logic. This means, without taking away the jobs of head doctors, that with the need to create new operational units or with the retirement of hospital heads, they will gradually be replaced by university heads. So the Sant’Elia hospital progressively over 4-5 years will see the university quota grow every year. The university professor who will come from Palermo and who will become head doctor will bring with him the specialization school, carrying out not only teaching assistance but also training and research. At this point it will become the training hospital, which will not only be carried out by the current hospital heads but also by university professors, therefore it will progressively become a polyclinic”.

“It must be said – he adds – that we are starting to do research in Caltanissetta. The young people who attend the University of Caltanissetta, in addition to the practical training, are trained in the city and, another message, the area specialists of the hinterland will be created”.

A positive result welcomed with enthusiasm in the area, the result of synergistic work carried out between the regional health department, the University of Palermo, the university consortium and the municipality. “I am happy with the result achieved – he states the honorable Michele Mancuso of Foza Italia – because we have worked so hard to start a university path that leads to the final goal of make the Sant’Elia a university hospital like Cannizzaro, Villa Sofia and Papardo, thus guaranteeing the protection of the positions of existing head doctors”.

There is no regional law for the full autonomy of Sant’Elia

The missing step for the Polyclinic to become a reality is the enactment by the ARS of a law that allows the Sant’Elia to acquire full autonomy, since to date it is administered by the ASP. “I am proud of the result achieved – he declares the president of the University Consortium of Nisse Walter Tesauro – because it is the demonstration of how cohesion and love for our city can do a lot. The Polyclinic is no longer a dream.”

“The protocol between the Region and the University of Palermo – adds the mayor Roberto Gambino – which starts the process of transformation of the Nisseno hospital Sant’Elia in University Hospitalis an important result of our entire city, which has mobilized for this objective as has not happened for decades, with the massive participation of young students, who took to the streets in their thousands, the mayors of the entire province, the Church of Nisse and the world of associations and volunteers who have been able to present to the regional government the will and determination to relaunch, with the university project, the quality of services and the development of an entire territory”.

“The protocol – continues the mayor – provides for the management of 350 beds by the University of Palermo, which has chosen to place them at the Sant’Elia hospital, already a II level DEA, unique in non-metropolitan cities in Sicily, here in Caltanissetta, where a degree course in Medicine and Surgery has existed for over 20 yearshighly accredited, already supported by Nursing Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and, for the next academic year, by a new degree course in Pharmacy and one in Technology-oriented Medicine”.

“The Municipality – concludes Gambino – has always supported the University project with determination, with substantial economic investments and availability of structures and services, often the only institution to take on the burdens, convinced as we are that quality is healthcare services and the presence of Universities can be crucial for the development of our territory, its professionalism and related activities that can involve all sectors of our local economy. We are increasingly convinced that the best results can only be achieved by strengthening the mechanisms of the vast area, strategically uniting the provinces of Caltanissetta, Agrigento and Enna and above all by uniting citizens and institutions, without distinction of political color, without exploitation for interests biased, without building virtual visibility on citizens’ problems, but working together with others to solve them”.
