VIAREGGIO. Police mourn death of chief superintendent Gianluca Rossi. He was 59 years old and was employed by the Viareggio police station. He passed away in his home in Torre del Lago at the beginning of May 2024. For about two years he had been struggling with an incurable disease. He leaves his wife Beatrice Ferrarialso a policewoman at the Viareggio police station, and her daughters Rebecca and Rachele.

Commendation and remembrance

During the 2010 police celebration Rossi was awarded a commendation for his work during the train massacre of 29 June 2009 in Viareggio. Gianluca Rossi, originally from Pavia, had been working at the Viareggio police station since 1987, when he first arrived as an associate and where he was hired on a permanent basis. This is how his colleague remembers him Lucio Chelotti, head of the anti-crime squad of which Rossi had also been part. «I shared many beautiful years of service with him – recalls Chelotti, now retired – he had been part of the La Spezia Nautical team at the beginning and was added to Viareggio with the divers, even though he wasn’t one, during the Carnival period . The experience in the city affected him so much that he decided to stay there, and was assigned to the Commissariat. He was initially part of the flying squads and then moved on to anti-crime. These were years in which we achieved excellent results professionally, thanks also to his work. We lived through the terrible experience of the railway massacre together with the entire police station. We were among the first to intervene in via Ponchielli and then in the months that followed, among the various tasks we also had that of recognizing the victims. We established a friendship that has remained with the families of the victims to this day.” Among those who worked with him there is also the deputy director of the Commissariat Gerardo Magliulo. “He was a dear person and an exceptional policeman. I can’t find the right words to describe it best. He leaves a deep void. In a very short time we will lose another friend” says Magliulo remembering the agent of the Viareggio police station Mirco Bellone, who died in his sleep at the age of 48.
