PIAN DI MASSIANO (PG), 18 APRIL 2024 – Stop in Game 1 of the Scudetto Final for MINT True Volley Monzaby Massimo Eccheli, outdated 3-1 (27-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23) by the World Champions of Sir Susa Vim Perugia. After the exciting victory in the Semi-final against Itas Trentino, the first men’s team of the Vero Volley Consortium was unable to find the desired result in the first match of a challenge that promises to be exciting. A Monza team which, despite suffering a comeback in the first set and also losing the second, showed a good game on the pitch, especially in the third set, managing to put Lorenzetti’s team in difficulty on several occasions and fighting until the end in a hard-fought fourth set.

For this historic Game-1 of the Scudetto Final, no changes to the victorious sextet against Trento, with Eccheli fielding Kreling as a setter and Loeppky opposite to, Maar And Takahashi spikers, Galaxies And Di Martino in the center e Gaggini free.

Deadly block by Takahashi to start the match in the best possible way in favor of MINT Vero Volley Monza, who did well to immediately find the break, also taking advantage of some inaccuracies in the home attack (0-3). Galassi’s ace brings the score to +4 for Brianza: time-out for the Umbrian bench. Perugia doesn’t want to let Monza escape and tries to come back, but Maar is able to find the mani-out which leaves the Brianza team at +3 (4-7). Back and forth between the two teams, with Monza tenacious in not allowing the block devils to return and then extending the lead with the second ace of the set for Galassi (7-11). Kreling puts all his attackers perfectly in rhythm, managing the lifts for his battery of attackers with skill and rhythm, thus allowing coach Eccheli’s team to climb up to +5 (11-16), before the second required time-out by Lorenzetti. Great series of exchanges, finalized by Kreling’s attack (12-17). Di Martino also enters the scene, author of a good first half for the maximum MINT advantage (14-20). Another comeback attempt for Perugia stopped at 18-21 by the first time-out of the match called by Eccheli. The Umbrians kicked into high gear, recovering to -1 (20-21), with the Brianza bench also forced to spend the second technical suspension. A set fought and played point to point, with MINT doing well to gain the set point (21-24). Perugia cancels all three opportunities available to the Lombards to close the contest, sending the game to the advantage (24-24). The Umbrians are more cynical, and complete the comeback at 27-25.

Great balance at the start of the second game, with neither team able to escape (2-2). Perugia, however, doesn’t take long to break the deadlock by placing the first break (5-2), which leads the Brianza bench to call a thirty-second suspension. Monza is unable to find, in this first phase, the right countermeasures to Perugia’s outbursts (7-2). Loeppky takes care of it (hands-out), waking him up from their torpor, immediately pushed back by Semeniuk’s block (9-3). Another three-man block from the home team, solid in the fundamentals, brings the contest to 10-3 before the second time-out requested by Eccheli. Newly entered Szwarc finds a dunk of pure power, but Monza is unable to get going (11-4). Semeniuk’s ace puts Perugia at +8 (15-7). Szwarc and Galassi fight in attack, bringing the Monza team back six points down (16-10). Takahashi scores an intelligent parallel, when, however, the set is compromised (20-12). Di Martino tries to shake things up with the winning first half and a nice monster block (20-14). Takahashi first and Maar bring the Brianza team closer again, but Sir still manages to close at 25-18.

Sir also gets off to a flying start in the third set, driven by Ben Tara’s ace (5-2). Loeppky with the long line and Szwarc with the diagonal bring Monza back to -2 (6-4). The Canadian opposite Szwarc entered the match well, scoring important points which increased the morale of the Brianza team, who did well to find the break to equalize (7-7). Stalemate phase of the match (9-9), broken by Loeppky’s ace while Lorenzetti asks for a time-out. Monza, after suffering the psychological backlash of the first set, manages to shake off the ghosts, fighting and responding blow for blow to the Umbrian team (12-12). Ace by Takahashi (14-13), but Plotnytskyi is in a state of grace and brings Perugia back ahead (16-15), before the time-out requested by Eccheli. Very balanced set (20-20), where everything will be decided in a very tight final. The teams fight head-on (22-22); MINT is not lucky in attack (23-22) and Eccheli chooses to spend the second technical suspension before the last points. Upon returning, Galassi strikes immediately with the first half of the equalizer (23-23), while Visic and Mujanovic come on to raise the wall. Move that pays off for MINT who earns the set point: Perugia time-out. Eccheli’s boys get excited in the decisive moment, with Galassi scoring with the monster block of 23-25.

The start of the fourth set is along the lines of the previous ones, with Perugia accelerating from the first ball (4-1) and with the Monza bench immediately spending a time-out. Monza equalized thanks to Szwarc’s winning serve and Takahashi’s two winning attacks, before overtaking thanks to Loeppky’s ace (6-7). Sir also pushes hard on serve with Plotnytskyi, author of the ace for the break at 10-8. Great first half by Di Martino, but Semeniuk scores, allowing Perugia to put a three-point gap on the Monza team (13-10). Monza is in difficulty in reception: another ace for Ben Tara and Umbria +5 (15-10). Vero Volley is a team with a huge heart, which makes resilience its best quality: in fact, it is Szwarc who kickstarts the Lombard comeback (16-14) which forces Lorenzetti to call the technical suspension. The Brianza team are fired up, always guided by Szwarc’s offensive verve and the unity of team play, which allows them to score the set at 18-18. Lorenzetti calls his players back after the overtaking by MINT (18-19). Another hotly contested set, where Perugia takes the lead again after Leon’s ace (20-21), immediately before the last time-out for coach Eccheli. Sir finds the break (22-20), but Maar takes care of keeping Vero Volley in the game with a precise diagonal. Takahashi does well to score the hand-out at 23-22, but Sir wins the opportunity for the first match point (24-22). Szwarc cancels the first, but Perugia wins the first match (25-23).

MVP of the match Simone Giannelli, also author of 6 points. Top scorer of the match for Monza the Japanese spiker Ran Takahashi, author of 18 points; good performance also for the Canadian opposite Arthur Szwarc with 16 balls placed on the ground, followed by Galassi with 10.

Now waiting for the MINT Vero Volley Monza, in just over two days, Game-2 within the friendly walls ofOpiquad ArenaSunday 21 April at 3.15pm.

THE STATEMENTS
Arthur Szwarc (MINT Vero Volley Monza):
“I think the match against Trento taught us a lot: this is only the first match of the Series against Perugia. We had a good chance in the first set, playing together as a team. Then we struggled a little more in the second and we weren’t able to get back into the match.”
