The beautiful book by journalist Alan David Scifo entitled “If Colapesce gets tired” was presented this evening at the Lucchesiana Library in Agrigento (Navarra Editore, 126 pp, 12 euros). During an evening dedicated to civil commitment aimed at safeguarding the environment, Scifo discussed pollution of air, water and land together with Don Angelo Chillura, director of the library, and the deputy prosecutor of the Republic of Agrigento, Salvatore Vella, of the deaths caused by the three petrochemical centers existing in Sicily, of the deaths caused by asbestos and much more.

The speakers, expertly coordinated by the journalist Gero Tedesco, addressed the main theme of the book with uncommon preparation and sensitivity, strongly highlighting the environmental issues linked to industrial pollution and waste management. Themes that the book develops very well, thus narrating the story of the pollution that is killing Sicily: from the sea of Augusta to Gela, from the mines of Caltanissetta to the Montecatini factory to the Lampedusa island, from the quarries of Trapani to the Mediterranean coast from Palermo to Trapani passing through Porto Empedocle and focuses on the correlation (often denied) between environmental damage and diseases: in the areas where ecomonsters are present, the cases of death from lung diseases, tumors, infections and rare congenital diseases are very high. Colossal and silent tragedies that clash with the inaction and corruption of the institutions.

A beautiful and instructive evening dedicated to environmental issues which helped an attentive and qualified audience to become more aware of a plague that must be eradicated as soon as possible.
