Roof ends up on the moving train: railway blocked for over an hour – L’Aquila

THE EAGLE. A large piece of sheet metal comes off the roof of the Mammarella nursery and ends up against the moving train. Tragedy was close to tragedy yesterday afternoon in Sant’Elia. Due to strong gusts of wind, the sheet metal first ended up on the tracks and then, once mowed down by the convoy, it was moved onto the railway. No injuries were reported even though the fear among the dozens of passengers on board the train, which left the capital’s station and headed for Sulmona, was strong. Arrival was scheduled for 3.52pm. Instead it happened (with replacement buses) with over 3 hours of delay. Rail traffic remained suspended for over an hour, as the firefighters had to intervene on site to remove the pieces of sheet metal and make the tracks safe. An inspection was also carried out by railway staff who found no damage to either the train or the passengers. The flying squad of the L’Aquila police station and a police patrol also intervened on site to manage the situation and carry out the necessary investigations. Once safety conditions were restored, the train resumed travel and stopped at Paganica station, where passengers got off and boarded replacement buses made available by Trenitalia. The strong wind, widely announced in the forecasts, had its effects felt across the entire province. At least 10 interventions were carried out by firefighters in the capital, but also in Avezzano and Sulmona where firefighters intervened to remove some trees that had fallen due to the gusts.
