MESSINA – They are overall 17,880 metres of coast, falling within the territory of the Municipality of Messina, declared not suitable for bathing by the Region. In detail, little more than 7 kilometers of coast have been closed to bathing for pollution reasons, about 10 kilometers because they fall in port or industrial areaswhile the remaining part (300 meters of coastline in total) is affected by entries (the mouth of the Giampilieri torrent and the discharge of the Acqualadroni purifier).
The situation was crystallized in DDG n.324/2024 of 18 March of the regional health department, Department of Health Activities and Epidemiological Observatory, containing the provisions relating to the 2024 bathing season in Sicily. Season that will officially begin on May 1st and it will end October 31st.

Mayor Basile’s ordinance

Having received the note from the Asp Messina Uoc Laboratorio Di Sanità Pubblica, containing the lists of the stretches of sea and coast within the Municipality of Messina not used for bathing, the mayor Federico Basile signed an ordinance (n. 56 of 11 April 2024) with which it establishes a ban on bathing in the affected sections. The Municipal Police Force will be responsible for supervising and imposing the expected sanctions on violators. Basile also instructed the Environmental Services Department to place “metal signs in an adequate number and mutually visible, indicating the ban in question and, in any case, at the end of the pedestrian and/or vehicular access roads to the affected sea areas”.

Stretches of sea and coast not used for bathing due to pollution

• Messina – 6,400 metres, from the mouth of the Larderia stream to the mouth of the Portalegni stream
• Messina – 630 metres, from 50 meters south of the Regina Margherita hospital to 100 meters north of the mouth of the Annunziata stream
• Messina – 200 meters, from 100 meters south of the Lago Piccolo Torre Faro canal and 100 meters north of the Lago Piccolo Torre Faro canal

Stretches of sea and coast not used for bathing for other reasons (port, industrial areas)

• Messina – 1400 metres, from the south side of Porto Tremestieri to the Larderia stream
• Messina – 8950 metres, from Portalegni torrent to via Brasile

Stretches of sea and coast affected by releases – canals, streams, rivers, purifiers

• Messina – 100 meters, from the mouth of the Giampilieri stream to 50 meters north of the mouth of the Giampilieri stream
• Messina – 200 metres, from 100 meters east of the Acqualadroni purifier discharge to 100 meters west of the Acqualadroni purifier discharge
