From romanticism to views to the season of the wars of Independence. The nineteenth century was an intense century for Lombardy, full of epochal changes reflected in works of art. A ferment explored in the exhibition 800 Lombard. Rebellion and conformism, from Hayez to Previatiin Monza at theOrangery – Royal Palace of Monza and Civic Museums of Monza from April 13th until July 28, 2024.

The nineteenth-century Lombard artistic scene

The exhibition allows you to immerse yourself in a very lively season of LombardyL’nineteenth centurythrough paintings, drawings and sculptures, to reveal the Lombard artistic scene populated by masters such as Hayez, Faruffini, Medardo Rosso And Get ahead of yourself.

Curated by Simona Bartolena, produced and created by ViDi cultural, in collaboration with the Villa Reale and Parco di Monza Consortium and with the Municipality of Monza, the exhibition is divided into two places not only to accommodate the over 150 works that make up the review, but also to separate the Monza focus (to the Civic Museums) from that Lombard in general (at the Orangerie).

The exhibition itinerary is developed in thematic areas in which the movements and iconographies used in that period, accompanied by biographies and give them personality of individual artists, thus showing how “the nineteenth century was, in Monza, in Lombardy and throughout Italy, a century that expressed high quality artistsnot to be considered only French or English”, explained the curator Bartolena.

From romanticism to the wars of Independence

The exhibition hall of the Civic Museums hosts the works of the great Monza artists Pompeo MarianiMoses whites, Eugenio Spreafico and Emilio Borsa who represented Monza, a city which at that time was experiencing a strong industrial expansion.

L’Orangerie, on the other hand, focuses on the Milanese environment and the Lombardy provinces. The review opens with romantic season and the figure of Francesco Hayeza master who left his mark on Milanese culture and who inspired other contemporary painters whose works are exhibited, such as James Trecourt, Massimo d’Azeglio And Giuseppe Molteni.

Ample space then to landscape artiststo the “prospective” of the first half of the century as Angelo Ingannibut also to gender landscape with works by Eugene Gignous, Silvio Poma And Filippo Carcanowhich in that period became very popular thanks to the representations of campaigns Brianza, the mountains hey lakes of the region.

The itinerary then moves on to the period of wars of independencewith paintings focused on Risorgimento themesamong which stand out works by Gerolamo and Domenico Indunoalso known for their scenes in which they narrate the daily life both of less wealthy classes than those more wealthy with scenes of romantic encounters and set in bourgeois living rooms.

The exhibition also features works by the visionary Giovanni Carnovali known as “Il Piccio”, Federico Faruffani And Peaceful Cremonawho together with Daniele Ranzoni and Giuseppe Grandi will found the movement of Dishevelment.
