Supervision strengthened a Don Luigi Merola, after his car was stolen in Marano about a week ago, then found in Scampia two days later. The priest himself gave the news on the sidelines of the meeting called by the prefect Michele of Bariwho yesterday chaired the provincial committee for public order and safety, on the occasion of which, among other things, the issue of the theft of the car used by Father Merola, president of the Foundation ‘A Voce d’ ‘and creatures, who insists: «I don’t want the escort, it would be a return to the past. I want to continue my activity calmly, perhaps with greater vigilance.” During the session, an in-depth analysis of the situation in San Giorgio a Cremano was also carried out, where a serious attack against a minor occurred on 21 April.

The committee

First the raid and the subsequent theft of the car against a parish priest who was a symbol of the fight against clans like Don Luigi Merola; then the wounding of a 13-year-old boy in the Vesuvian hinterland. From these two facts we started to take stock and adopt appropriate solutions during the meeting of the Committee for Public Order and Security convened by the prefect. Two episodes that are the mirror of the escalation of violence that continues to increase between Naples and its Metropolitan City.

«For what Don Luigi does he deserves our attention – said the prefect on the sidelines of the session – and the invitation to this meeting meant precisely the possibility that his activity is carried out in the utmost serenity, which is why there will be some degree of greater attention towards him”, he added. Another “hot” issue of the last few days is the attack on a minor which occurred in San Giorgio in addition to the events in Afragola, on which the prefect explained: «It is an overall theme that has been addressed, in particular in the case of San Giorgio where the fact that a 13 year old was attacked by a notable number of other minors fto think that we must implement prevention activities, but also that the behavioral structures of these children need incisive pedagogical paths, so that all this can no longer happen. Never as in this case is there a need to accompany these kids, because what has happened is very serious.” Finally, regarding the attack on the Pnrr Di Bari funds, he recalled that “there is an anti-mafia prevention activity”.

Don Merola

«If they had given me the escort I would have refused it. Because it was taken away from me 6 years ago and today, as then, I was taking risks”. Don Merola comments thus on the prefecture’s provision which changed his surveillance from dynamic to dedicated: «It means that it has increased – he explains – and that every time I have to move, the agent who accompanies me will have to get in touch with a patrol of police forces order to communicate where I will be. I would never have accepted the escort again – he remarks again – it would have been like returning to the past. I want to continue doing good and saving kids from the clans. Living under guard again would mean losing your freedom, not being able to go to the stadium and not being able to take the children of the Foundation to the sea as we will do in the coming months with the summer camps. What I ask for is only greater vigilance.” After the discovery of the company car that had been stolen from him in Via Zuccarini, Father Luigi once again points the finger at the Camorra that manages car thefts: «I will say that the State has won when they find those responsible for the theft of my car, because the other Smart stolen together with mine has not been found to date. Furthermore, last night in via Tevere in the area where they took mine away, other vehicles were damaged. It’s like this every night: behind the car thefts and the “return horse” mechanism there is the Camorra. This must be defeated.”
