Piazza Giotto is ready for restoration. Furnishings, flooring and roads will be completely revised thanks to the Pnrr contributions assigned to the municipal administration. In total, just over 1.5 million euros were allocated for this specific intervention. The works, in what in the 80s and 90s was one of the most renowned districts of the city, will begin in May almost concurrently with those planned in Piazza Saione, another area which, in the coming months, will be completely redeveloped.
“We have already entrusted the works – specifies the municipal councilor Alessandro Casi – there are a few bureaucratic steps left and then we will leave. This is a particularly awaited work that will contribute to making this space more beautiful, tidy and usable by the population. We chose to eliminate the fountain which, over time, had become one of the many elements of decay. In its place new and functional furnishings will arise. Furthermore, during the entire duration of the works there will be no changes to traffic as the construction area will be entirely inside the square.”
What the square will be like: the project
As reported in the council resolution with which the executive project and the payment timetable were approved, the following interventions were envisaged:
- On the churchyard of the Sacred Heart church which takes on a rectangular configuration, following the dimensions of the building’s facade, with a width of 30 meters and a depth of 17.5 m where a draining floor is expected to collect rainwater.
- In the square, in the central rectangle, extraction towers will be installed, equipped with electrical power sockets to allow stands, concert stages, ice rinks or temporary play structures, or even additional lighting, to find accommodation without creating external systems. The lighting system on poles is intended to be positioned on the outskirts of the square to avoid occupying the central space.
- On the front square functional to the routes between via Lorenzetti and viale Giotto and from the Sandro Pertini park, it is intended to intervene by proposing a double public lighting system: the first, more functional, with peripheral lighting bodies to allow easy freedom of use without dimensions; the second, more scenographic, created by three lighting bodies of sculptural value, in the shape of a “tree”, placed at focal points of the spatial grid, conceived in such a way that, in its evening dress, the square changes appearance becoming a “forest of light”, a qualified place with dedicated lighting solutions that will have the task of creating a real backdrop to the central square.
- On travel, i.e. the system of public routes that connect via Lorenzetti to viale Giotto. The project incorporates this functional need and enhances these connections, which lead and accompany the spaces from one side to the other, making them now architectural walks through the churchyard with its spiritual signs, now places of crossing the greenery and the main square with the its coolness, now protected areas between the sessions in which to rest, or even more recreational routes such as the passage along the head square, where there are commercial premises and rest areas to encourage meeting and socialization.
- On the longitudinal routes made up of the pavements of viale Giotto and via Lorenzetti, on which the parking system and the bus stop remain functional, and on the route parallel to the side of the church and part of the pavement of viale Giotto, which is flanked by the renovated flowerbeds, finding, on one side, the roadside backdrop created from a row of pyramidal hornbeams, and on the other side, a flowerbed placed on the edge of the church ramps. All in line with the subsequent assessments and requests of the municipal administration.
