Collection of electronic waste (WEEE), the Province of Trapani keeps pace with the national average

According to Regional report on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) made by WEEE Coordination Centre – the body that summarizes the official results achieved by all the Collective Systems that deal with collection at municipal collection centers and collection places organized by the distribution and management of technological waste in Italy – in 2023 there Sicily has collected 23,551 tons of WEEE. The result And down 8.6% compared to 2022 and the region confirms sixth place. However, per capita collection also fell by 8.6%, thus reaching a 4.87 kg per inhabitant and for this reason, the region loses one position and slips to 17th place in the Italian ranking.

Decline in regional volumes (-39.8%) by TV and monitor (R3)they grow light sources (R5) with +17.4% for a total of 83 tons e great whites (R2) which with +10.3% rises to 7,812 tonnes. The growth trends of small appliances and consumer electronics (R4) And cold and climate (R1): the former improves by 5% and reaches 3,083 tonnes, the latter records +2.3% and stands at 7,625 tonnes. The reduction in regional volumes is linked to the decline in six of the nine Sicilian provinces. Among these, the Province of Trapani increases its collection ‘only’ by +8.6% for a total of 3,221 tonnes. Increases also in Caltanissetta and Enna. Contraction instead in the Province of Palermo, Messina, Catania, Syracuse, Ragusa and Agrigento.

THE per capita values of the provinces of Enna and of Trapani, in particular, are confirmed as the highest at a regional level, with 8.02 kg/inhabitant (+40%) and 7.72 kg/inhabitant (+8.6%) respectively. Favoring the growth of the per capita figure in the Trapani area are instead the volumes of various TVs and monitors and climate equipmentso much so that each inhabitant initiates correct disposal of almost 1 kg per person more (+45.4%) of the latter compared to the national average of 1.71 kg/inhabitant, and more than double (+111.7%) of the former compared to the 0.81 kg/inhabitant collected on average by every Italian.

“With the exception of the provinces of Enna, Trapani and partly also Messina, which maintain per capita values higher than the national average, the rest of the region has not given itself the opportunity to develop its own infrastructure network for the collection of WEEE in 2023, to enjoy greater economic resources deriving from more efficient collection, to promote a circular economy for the benefit of the territory”he comments Fabrizio Longoni, general director of the WEEE Coordination Centre. “Small increases have emerged in four of the five groupings, but large and especially small WEEE are missing. This requires greater investments in training and controls for those involved in the collection activity and in environmental education dedicated to citizens. Until this happens, the Sicilian provinces will continue to run at multiple speeds with the risk that those that still do not reach 3 kg/inhabitant will remain behind, negatively impacting the overall collection. The region has a task to undertake personally: to increase the tracked collection of WEEE and combat illegal phenomena. Will be able?”.
