The results of theVenice airport who, in early April, saw a 7% growth in the number of progressive takeoffs compared to the same days in 2023, going from 803 to 747 last year. They are expected from April to October, i.e. for the 2024 summer season 13 million passengers, but the data could update further upwards. This despite the boarding tax of 2.5 euros for each passenger departing from Marco Polo, established in May 2023, makes the Venetian intercontinental airport the most expensive in Italy (adding to the 2.5 euros the 6.5 surcharge imposed at all airports in the country, as gazzettino.it specifies).
The note from the Municipality
The fact that the surcharge does not affect the results of the airport is underlined by the town of Venice replying to the letter of Enrico Marchipresident of the Save Group, who had written to the mayor Luigi Brugnaro to ask him about abolish the boarding tax. “For the airport, 2023 closed with over 11 million passengers, +21.4% compared to 2022, and a positive trend of +3% compared to the corresponding month of 2019, largely for international flights – wrote the Municipality of Venice -. A sign, therefore, of the vitality and attractiveness of our airport. Data confirming that the introduction of the 2.5 euro surcharge it didn’t affect in the recovery of post-pandemic traffic”.
Based on data from Aeroporto Online, a site on management analyzes of airports created by Massimo Soppani – former general director of Marco Polo airport since 2004 and former general director of Catullo airport in Verona – the start of the summer season is good for Venice and Verona (which in the first 7 days of April grew by 12% with 222 takeoffs compared to 199 in early April 2023), while Treviso is doing poorly, which is negative on average for 4 days out of 7, recording a progressive minus 3%. As regards Venice, growth is balanced on all days of the week “without recording particular variations in the low cost component with the exception of a more evident imbalance of Ryanair compared to easyJet”.
