Milan, 4 April. Lombardy also confirms in 2023 its record on a national basis in terms of collection of waste from electrical and electronic equipment. This is highlighted by the data from the regional report of the WEEE coordination centre, according to which the region has started the correct recycling of 62,660 tonnes of this type of waste, recording the best result in terms of overall collection volumes.

“Lombardy – commented the regional councilor for the Environment and Climate Giorgio Maione – is the most virtuous region in Italy and is also a European model in the collection of WEEE. A significant result, because the correct disposal of this type of waste is essential for protecting the environment and contributes to combating the growing shortage of resources”.

“The Lombardy Region – added Maione – has chosen to focus decisively on the circular economy in all sectors. A vision that is rewarding and that pushes us to find further innovative solutions to encourage reuse and waste reduction. The virtuous behavior of citizens is the basis of this concept and the data demonstrate how Lombardy people have a strong sensitivity towards environmental issues”.

Although in an absolute sense the data recorded by Lombardy shows a decline of 2.5% compared to 2022, this value is still better when compared to the decline recorded on a national basis, which stands at -3.1%. Same trend also for the per capita collection of WEEE which, despite the 2.5% drop, still stands at 6.30 kg per inhabitant, a figure above the Italian average, equal to 5.92 kg/inhabitant .

Going into more detail, the report highlights how the highest per capita collection in 2023 was once again recorded by the province of Como with 7.88 kg/inhabitant (-1.7%). The data is determined in particular by the collection of washing machines and large white goods (dishwasher, cooking appliances and similar). For this type of WEEE the result recorded was more than 1 kg higher (+57.3%) than the national average (2.07 kg/inhabitant).

Another positive fact highlighted by the report is the fact that in 2023 the Lombardy provinces will rise to 8 with a per capita figure higher than the Italian average (5.92 kg/inhabitant. In addition to the aforementioned Como, there are in fact Monza and Brianza with 6, 96 kg/inhabitant (-2.1%), Brescia with 6.62 (-1.9%), Milan with 6.58 kg/inhabitant (-4.9%), Mantua with 6.28 kg/inhabitant ( +4.3%), Cremona and Sondrio, both with 6.16 kg/inhabitant, (the first is +1.3%, the second -6.4%). And finally Lecco, with 5.95 kg /ab (-0.3). Even the inhabitants of the province of Milan collect almost 1 kg of washing machines and large whites more (+45.7%) than the Italian average. The provinces of Brescia, Cremona, Lecco and Mantua obtain instead a similar result in the collection of small household appliances and consumer electronics.
