Micheli (Pd) launches a request for minimum wage in contracts with the Municipality of Siena

“Ensure that each worker who works for the Municipality of Siena receives just enough pay of 9 euros an hour to guarantee the person and the family a free and dignified existence”. This is what the municipal councilor of the Democratic Party Luca Micheli he asks the Siena City Council in his deposited question which will be discussed in the next City Council. A clear request for minimum wage wages in the Municipality’s employment contracts.

“Mine is a question to try to give a stimulus to the Municipal Administration so that those who work for the Municipality of Siena, especially the companies that contract out services, have as a point of reference not only the service, but also the well-being of the own employees – explains the Sienese Dem councilor Luca Micheli your question -. Employee well-being that comes from working safely and having a salary that allows them to obtain a minimum of dignity compared to the prices that are around. The €9 gross can be considered a fairly acceptable parameter so that there is not only work, but so that there is also dignity in the work itself.
I would like the Municipality to take the initiative as other Municipalities in Italy do and set a good example. In my opinion, this would be a good start, also to screen the companies and cooperatives that work for the public. And so in some way this screening could help us obtain contracts with companies or cooperatives that are in some way more solid and therefore invest more in safety”.

A measure that several cities, especially administered by the centre-left, are already implementing which for the Dems takes on a value of legal civilization and a concrete form of economic protection for workers who have the right, in implementation of article 36 of the Constitution, to a salary appropriate and dignified. Therefore the City Councilor expects to receive unanimity from all political forces and the favor of the City Administration.

“I honestly expect there to be sharing on this issue – adds Councilor Micheli confidently -, because it is indeed a political thing, but I also believe that it should not have any kind of colour. Also because everyone points to the PD as the party of the radical chic, and in this case it will be a good idea for those who don’t feel radical chic in some way to do something concrete for those who unfortunately don’t have enough pay to allow them to live a dignified life.”
