Rome, 29 March 2024 – As part of an important initiative aimed at promoting the work integration of migrants from Morocco, a significant memorandum of understanding was signed at Palazzo dei Normanni, seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly.

The agreement, signed between the Sicily Foreign Workers Association, the Human Solidarity Consortium and the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), aims to offer new job opportunities to migrants from Morocco, thus reducing the need for risky Mediterranean crossings .

According to what is established in the protocol, Moroccan migrants will follow a training course in their country of origin, supported and financed by the UGTM of Fez, in order to acquire the skills necessary to be employed in seasonal jobs at companies in Bronte, in the province of Catania, and of Valledolmo, in the Palermo area.

The initiative is part of a regulatory context that favors such agreements, as provided for by the Consolidated Law on Immigration, especially after the recent innovations introduced by the Cutro Decree. Furthermore, the UGTM will engage in the selection and recruitment of Moroccan students interested in participating in the training programs.

A crucial aspect of this initiative is the creation of a favorable ecosystem in Bronte and Valledolmo, which will include not only professional training, but also the insurance of decent housing and social support during the process of entering the world of work.

Paolo Ragusa, regional president of the Sicilian Foreign Workers Association, underlined the importance of offering safe and legal alternatives to the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean, while Driss Abelhad, provincial secretary of Fez of the UGTM, highlighted the commitment to following the directives King Mohammed VI to limit illegal immigration and strengthen international partnerships.

The Councilor for Social Policies of the Sicilian Region, Nuccia Albano, underlined the importance of facilitating the work placement of migrants coming from abroad, while Andrea Messina, head of the Department of Local Authorities, highlighted the need to implement paths training courses to facilitate access to the job market and simplify the integration process.

At a time when immigration remains a complex challenge to face, these new agreements represent a significant step towards a more organized and humane management of migratory flows, offering concrete opportunities for work and integration for migrants from Morocco.
