There is an irrefutable fact regarding Palermo after the second half of Cremona: the 4-2-3-1 designed by Mr. Corini, while guaranteeing good quantities of goals, is not sustainable with the current men. The defense, evidently too light, cannot handle a two-man midfield which, in addition to Gomes, includes a Jacopo Segre who certainly has more skills in insertion than in breaking. It is therefore urgent to try something else.
The solution, for the Rosanero team, could come “from Bergamo”: in recent years, in fact, coach Giampiero Gasperini has set a precedent with his 3-4-2-1/1-2, being emulated very often, and successfully, by many coaches. Palermo, if you read their men carefully, could adapt very well to this tactical set-up.
Let’s start with the defense: Pigliacelli could continue to assert himself even in the setting phase; the return of Lucioni, then, guarantees a respectable trio, which would be completed by Diakité (or Graves) and Ceccaroni, who with the help of number 5 will hopefully return as reliable as at the beginning of the season.
In midfield some problems could be solved: by deploying Lund as a winger, in fact, the American would be relieved of covering tasks that are not yet suitable for him. The midfielder could act with more freedom, and on the right we could deploy both an offensive solution like Di Mariano, but also a less pushy player like Diakité himself.
The attack, then, offers varied solutions. When it is completely recovered, a place will certainly belong to Ranocchia: with 14 on the pitch you can opt either for the double striker (with Soleri next to Brunori) or, above all, for a double attacking midfielder: the presence in fact of Ranocchia and Di Francesco behind a Brunori free to vary would offer many new ideas to the rosanero’s maneuver.
All that remains is to wait and see what Mister Corini will try to do. Although the team is perhaps not the strongest in the championship, it is undoubtedly complete enough to try something new, to give meaning to the remaining part of the championship.
