The Lucanian administrations warn citizens against malicious people who roam the towns
Unfortunately, scams against the elderly are increasing exponentially, especially if they live alone. In Italy, they are increasingly frequent and also in our region. There are various reports from municipal administrations.
In the Potenza area, from Oppidus Lucanusthe First Citizen Mirco Evangelistaannounces an “important notice to all citizens”: «In recent days in the municipality of Oppido, bad actors are posing as policemen, bank managers, relatives of people in difficulty, using deceptive methods to extort money, especially from the elderly». The Mayor also goes into detail regarding the modus operandi of these scammers: “they call or show up at the homes of elderly people claiming that a family member has been involved in a serious accident, therefore stating the urgent need for cash for medical care and/or legal expenses”. Evangelista also informs fellow citizens on how to defend themselves from such people: «Don’t open the door to strangers. No member of the Police Force would ever ask for money in this way; If you have any doubts, contact 112 immediately. Finally, we invite all citizens to warn elderly people and relatives of these fraudulent practices. Tell them not to trust requests for money from strangers, especially if they involve alleged incidents of loved ones or family members.”
From San Chirico Nuovo also the Mayor Rossella Baldassarre warns fellow citizens «that in the neighboring municipalities, numerous phone calls were made to the elderly to carry out scams and deceptions against them. We need to be vigilant and careful to prevent it from happening here too. It is recommended to always report suspected cases – he concludes – The police and the Municipality are available and ready to intervene”.
What is happening in the Potenza area, however, is similar to what is happening in the Matera area: here too the administrations inform the citizens and warn them against the danger of scams,
scams and robberies. From GrassanoMayor Filippo Luberto writes: «Dear fellow citizens, this morning I was informed of several cases of attempted extortion, against the elderly and beyond. Please call law enforcement immediately if you receive any suspicious calls. Be very careful, they are scams.”
So too from Garaguso Mayor Francesco Auletta and the municipal administration issue a «Important warning: be careful of scams, especially for the elderly. If you receive suspicious phone calls or unknown people knock on the door you can contact the Carabinieri station or 112. Be very careful.”
