A twinning against the ‘ndrangheta remembering the 53 union victims killed by the mafia since 1905

At the end of the initiative Cgil, Spi and Libera the memorandum of understanding was signed to renovate an asset confiscated from the ‘ndrangheta in Gioiosa Ionica and a plaque was unveiled in memory of the trade union victims of the mafia

The initiative “Memory, legality, commitment – lands and freedom against the mafias“, held today in the Territorial Chamber of Labor of Rimini, also saw the presence and greetings of the Rimini Police Commissioner Olimpia Abbate; intervention much appreciated. In the morning, very crowded, yes concluded with two significant moments: the signing of the memorandum of understanding between CGIL, the SPI pensioners union of the province of Rimini and the Reggio Calabria metropolitan area with the Lido Don Milani Association of Gioiosa Ionica and the installation of a memorial plaque of trade union victims of the mafia. During the morning, in addition to the screening of the documentary film by Mirco Paganelli “Rimini against the mafias”, the General Secretary of CGIL Rimini Francesca Lilla Park thanked the volunteers of the retired union who participated in the E!state libera legality camps.

The twinning against the ‘Ndrangheta

CGIL And Spi of Rimini and Reggio Calabriatogether with theLido Don Milani Association of Gioiosa Ionica, formally signed the agreement for the legal re-emergence of an asset confiscated from the ‘Ndrangheta; it’s about the “Lido Don Milani” bathing establishment in Gioiosa Ionica. The beach confiscatedlocated on the Riviera dei Gelsomini, is an asset confiscated in 2001 from the Mazzaferro gang – and assigned in 2021 toDon Milani Association. The confiscated property, defaced and disused for some time, will return to its legal operation thanks also to the economic and material contribution of the project promoted by CGIL And by the pensioners’ union of Rimini. This is a concrete commitment which, thanks to this twinning, has already led to the purchase of an electric generator, useful for the rebirth of the lido. The next steps, as recalled by Meris Soldiers in his speech, there will also be those to identify, in the province of Rimini, entrepreneurial subjects interested in contributing materially with means and instruments.

The meaning of the initiative is to create unit between territories which, each in their own contexts, are acting to prevention and fight against the infiltration of organized crime.

A plaque not to be forgotten

At 12outside the CGIL headquarters in Rimini, the plaque in memory of fiftythree trade union victims of the mafia, fallen since 1905 defending the rights of workers and laborers. In front of the plaque there were, in addition to the interventions of Roberto Battaglia (SPI Rimini) e Claudia Claudia Carlino (National SPI), also the institutional ones of the Councilor of the Municipality of Rimini with responsibility for legality Francesco Bragagni and the Provincial Councilor with responsibility for legality Alice Parma. The background of the plaque bearing the names of the union victims is a reproduction of the work of Gaetano Porcasi “Epic of the trade unionists” and contains a phrase from Emanuele Macaluso: “The union has a responsibility to form consciences and today it can have an impact on counteracting dangerous political processes. This is why we can only say to our murdered comrades: we do not forget.”
