Close to the feast of the Patron Saint of Reggio Calabriathe municipal building welcomed the artist’s painting Fabrizia Ghione. Mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà received a visit from the Turin artist transplanted to Reggio in the mayors’ hall who donated a pictorial representation of the famous legend of St. George on horseback defeating the dragon, the same one present in the heraldic coat of arms of the City. The painting will remain on display for the next few days in the Hall of Mayors of the Municipal Palace and will be displayed in the Council Hall on St. George’s Day.

The Mayor’s intervention

“I thank the artist Fabrizia Ghione for this gift she intended to give to our city. It is significant that this is done by a citizen of Turin, who in reality is now Reggio Emilia by adoption. It is a sign of how much those who come from outside have the opportunity to fall in love with our beautiful city, to become so passionate about it that they allow themselves to be inspired in their own art. The painting of San Giorgio is a beautiful representation of a scene so dear to the people of Reggio, that of our patron saint who pierces the dragon with his spear, the eternal symbol of good conquering evil. It is a tribute that we accept with great pleasure and which will enrich the artistic heritage present inside the Municipal Palace”.

The words of the artist Fabrizia Ghione

“I painted this picture because I am in love with this city – said the artist Fabrizia Ghione when meeting the mayor – I moved here many years ago and found what really matters to me. And this inspired me in the sense of gratitude towards the city, which I wanted to thank by donating my particular vision of Saint George who in this painting manages to defeat the dragon thanks to the fact that he reads a book. And this is the meaning of what culture is for me, but it is only an example because culture can be anything. For me the book represents everything that can teach you something, therefore the experience that everyone has and can pass on by making their own contribution to the community. So the San Giorgio that becomes a community, that puts the we forward more than the “I”, because in my opinion in these times individualism is very strong. Instead, in this city I found a much stronger community than in other places where I lived – concluded the artist – a sense of community which represents a priority for me in my way of approaching life”.
