G7 climate, energy and environment: yesterday in Venaria Reale (Turin) the demonstration of environmentalists and antagonists took place. That is, No to everything

TURIN (from our correspondent). The (peaceful) No demonstration yesterday afternoon in Venaria Reale (Turin).

No to the Bridge over the Strait of Messina, no to the TAV, no to the TAP in Puglia, no to the Gronda, no to choices on climate, energy, the environment, no to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the Middle East.

A procession made up of just over a thousand demonstrators of various political, antagonistic and environmentalist colors walked through the streets of the centre. Shopkeepers closed their businesses for fear of violent clashes that could damage their shop windows.

Some of the inhabitants followed the procession from their balconies. Others commented with “That’s 4 cats”.

And despite various and very articulated memberships, the numbers of those present were very low, a sign that these movements too have lost their initial impetus or that they intend to carry out “dress rehearsals” in view of the G7 in Puglia in June.

Other “dress rehearsals” are on the agenda for May 18th in Villa San Giovanni (Reggio Calabria) against the construction of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina and against the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini (mentioned several times by the demonstrators yesterday) and on May 25th in Naples against differentiated autonomy.

Returning to yesterday’s march, on the street there were also anarchists from the Italian Anarchist Federation (FAI) with their red and black flags, but also those from the Askatasuna Social Centre, militants from the grassroots trade unionism of the CUB (Basic Unitary Confederation) and of the Cobas, militants of Potere al Popolo, exponents of No TAV.

Numerous Palestinian flags.

The procession made up of elderly and young people, including some families with children in strollers, braved the rain.

Starting from the Galileo Ferraris Park, after symbolically occupying the ring road (causing some concern for the Turin Police Headquarters, which soon returned), he continued the route.

In Piazza Vittorio Veneto, super-guarded by the Mobile Units of the State Police who had blocked every possible access route to the Royal Palace of Venaria, where this morning at 10 am the Minister of the Environment, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin will open the work of the G7 dedicated to the climate, energy and environment, also deploying a couple of water cannon trucks ready to intervene if the demonstrators attempted to break through the safety device, various interventions were held.

There were also “fiery” interventions against the representatives of the G7 countries, the program of the summit’s work, against the energy choices which, for the demonstrators, are to be linked to wars.

Everything went smoothly apart from the burning of some wood from old platforms, the usual US flag and the posters with the faces of national and international political leaders, the demonstrators resumed their journey, ending with other speeches and moments celebration of the environmentalists of Extinction Rebellion, in the same Park.

A dance by Extinction Rebellion militants,

Today, at the opening of the summit again in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a group of environmentalists intends to hold a popular assembly and in the evening, while a gala dinner will be underway at Palazzo Madama for the representatives of the G7 delegations and international guests and for accredited journalists, a protest which we hope will also be peaceful.
