From April 1st, all Italian citizens will be able to access Medically Assisted Procreation without paying any ticket.
“In Italy it is estimated that 5% of children are born following assisted fertilization” declares the doctor Giorgio Colarieti, head of the Ruggi PMA centre, activated last March 8th, on the occasion of Women’s Day, the new second level Public Center for Assisted Procreation, as established by the Campania Region, included in the National PMA Register of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
“Until today – explains Doctor Colarieti on the phone – the residents of Salerno have had to resort to private centers or go abroad. It will now be possible to offer them this service in a public structure thanks to the recruitment of dedicated expert staff, the investment in innovative technologies and the creation of a new structure in which a highly specialized multidisciplinary team operates that uses the most advanced techniques and the most sophisticated systems available today, similar to those with which the centers of excellence present abroad are equipped”.
The procedure involves booking the first visit through the regional CUP, having previously acquired a referral from the general practitioner issued to the woman aged no more than 46 years. in the center, then, those suffering from tumor or chronic-degenerative pathologies in fertile age who risk compromising fertility due to invasive therapies will have the possibility at the Salerno hospital to cryopreserve the gametes or ovarian tissue.
In addition it must be said that on 16 March the Service dedicated to the Transport of Neonatal Emergencies (STEN) was activated which will operate in the provinces of Salerno and Avellino, covering a possible user base of approximately 10 thousand births/year. In the two provinces indicated, around 300 newborns need ultra-specialist support every year.
