Restoration operations on the railway section have been intensified, so it will reopen sooner than expected.

The complete restoration of the connection on the tracks between Rome and Puglia is approaching. Rail traffic on the Foggia-Benevento line will be reactivated on 8 April, having been suspended since 12 March due to a landslide which affected an area of the Campania region. Over 70 technicians from the Italian Railway Network and qualified contractors are working tirelessly to reduce inconvenience and bring forward the reactivation, initially scheduled for 14 April.

After the rains of last March 12, following an inspection by RFI’s specialized personnel, landslides were found which affected the Starza tunnel and which caused disruption for approximately 250 meters in the Ariano Irpino-Montecalvo section . It was thus decided to immediately interrupt railway traffic. Further investigations highlighted damage to one of the tunnel’s ventilation shafts, as well as localized instability of the work. Gradually we are proceeding with the construction of a reinforced concrete wall at the base of the well, in order to isolate and protect the railway bed. At the same time, the activities necessary for geological monitoring continue, including through the installation of broad-spectrum sensors.

“We have followed the story of the landslide on the Foggia-Benevento line from the first moment since it seriously affected transport to and from Puglia – said the transport councilor, Anita Maurodinoia – An unpredictable event that was faced and promptly resolved by RFI, whom I thank, just as I thank the railway transport companies and Ita Airways for trying to make up for the inconvenience for travelers with replacement and alternative proposals”.
