Lamezia Terme: Forza Italia’s Contradiction between Frustration and Hope

Analysis of the Complex Political Dynamics in the Third Most Populous City in Calabria

In the political fabric of Lamezia Terme, the presence of Forza Italia takes on a paradoxical nature: on the one hand, the party enjoys a solid base and the support of the mayor Paolo Mascaro; on the other, it remains fragile and incapable of influencing regional decisions. Despite the relative electoral success in the last regional elections, the party failed to obtain a seat in Palazzo Campanella.

Some local leaders stood out for their commitment to supporting the regional president, but their attempt to influence the Forza Italia national congress was thwarted by the resistance of the party’s central leadership. The city of Lamezia Terme, in the meantime, suffers a progressive decline, characterized by the neglect of hospitals, the lack of an industrial development plan and the abandonment of infrastructure projects.

Despite this, many Forza Italia militants seem to be content with a purely symbolic role, limiting themselves to celebrating their membership of the party. Frustration is growing, fueled by the perception of being ignored by regional institutions. In this context, the Northern League deputy Furgiuele emerges as a critical voice towards President Occhiuto and his government methods. His growing protagonism could have a significant impact on the local political landscape, especially if Forza Italia leaders continue to remain silent in the face of the community’s needs.
