He showed up at the emergency room of the Pescara hospital demanding to be hospitalized, and to “convince” the health workers he did not hesitate to take a knife out of his pocket, threatening to harm himself. The man, a 46-year-old convicted felon, was arrested at the end of the evening for resisting a public official, also receiving charges for interruption of public service and possession of objects capable of offending.

It happened on Tuesday evening in the emergency room, which had already been the scene of attacks against staff on duty in the past. The 46-year-old showed up at the hospital saying he wasn’t feeling well. At that moment there were already many patients waiting to be seen and others undergoing treatment who were stationed on stretchers and wheelchairs. An evening like any other, in the emergency room of the Santo Spirito hospital, until the man, after being examined, started arguing with the medical staff and demanding to be hospitalized. All attempts to make him see reason were useless, until suddenly the knife appeared.

Brandishing the weapon, the man began shouting that he would hurt himself with the blade if they did not comply with his request for a bed in the ward. Doctors and nurses tried to calm him, but the man was very agitated and, above all, was armed with a knife. A picture that is anything but reassuring, considering the episodes of aggression against healthcare workers that are recorded daily in Italy. The forty-six-year-old’s outing also aroused concern among the other patients waiting in the emergency room, some of whom watched the scene helplessly, aware that they could do nothing to stop him.

To prevent the situation from degenerating and the forty-six-year-old’s fury from turning into a danger to the safety of the staff and other patients present, the intervention of the police station was requested and a patrol was sent. The flying squad officers, who quickly arrived on site, found themselves faced with a man who was ranting, shouting incoherent phrases and threatening to injure himself. Their attempt to bring him back to calm also ended unsuccessfully. And meanwhile the man continues to brandish the knife. Having exhausted all verbal attempts to bring him to reason, the police officers managed to approach him safely, block him and disarm him. And at the end of the evening the man was also put in handcuffs. Now he will have to answer for resisting a public official, interruption of public service and possession of an object capable of offending.
