Catania, no Mass for Mussolini: the archbishop cancels the celebration

No mass in memory of the Duce in Catania. The celebration, which was announced today in an obituary published in our newspaper, and planned in the “Santa Caterina” Church in Catania, to remember Benito Mussolini, has been cancelled.

The decision was made by Archbishop Luigi Renna, after learning of the celebration from the press notice. Renna himself also ordered the closure of the church on the afternoon of Sunday 28 April until the following day.

The decision is motivated by Msgr. Reindeer to avoid the possibility of inappropriate ideological expressions on the sidelines of a memorial Mass which have had unpleasant precedents in the recent past.

The management of La Sicilia underlines that obviously the obituary at the basis of the Diocese’s decision and whose client (as in previous years) is a lawyer from the Court of Catania, does not in any way express the editorial line of a newspaper, entrusted rather to that that journalists write and for this reason it specifically refers to the editorial published on 25 April on the occasion of Liberation Day.
