Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024: the third round at the Onda

With the exit of the horses from the Entrance of the Podestà Courtyard in Piazza del Campo at 19.45took place this evening, Sunday 30 June, the third trial of the Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024 in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano, whose Drappellone that will go to the winning Contrada was created by Giovanni Gasparro (go to the article).

The third trial of the Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024 was won by Contrada of the Wave with Carlo Sanna known as Brigante on Tabacco.

With all the mounts from the first two tests confirmed, the order of entry between the ropes for the third test followed theassignment order (order of extraction of the Contrade for the assignment of the horses): Caterpillar, Ram, Owl, Panther, Goose, Wolf, Nicchio, Unicorn, Wave and Giraffe chasing.

The results of previous tests

• The first tryrun on Saturday 29 June at 7.45pm, was won by Contrada del Nicchio with Elias Mannucci known as Turbine on Akida (go to the article).
• The second testrun on Sunday 30 June at 9am, was won by Contrada della Lupa with Andrea Coghe known as Tempesta on Zenios. (go to the article).

In a Palio characterized by many debutants, six among the horses and, at the moment, two among the jockeys (remember that the jockeys can be changed until the moment of marking on the morning of the Palio), there are two pairs of Rival districts who compete on the tuff of Piazza del Campo in the Palio di Provenzano on 2 July 2024: Owl-Leocorno e Valdimontone-Nicchio.

As for the lot of cavalli participants, there are only four who have already competed in the Palio, none of whom have been career winners: Tobacco (6 Corsican Palios), Angel face (3 Corsican Palios), Ungaros (2 Corsican Palios), Summer (1 Palio held) NB the statistics do not take into account the current Palio. There are six horses making their debut on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Akida, Ardeglina, Ares Elce, Brivido Sardo, Criptha and Zenios.

• Jonathan Bartoletti said Disarray: 29 Palios run, 5 won
• Carlo Sanna said Brigand: 15 Palios run, 2 won (1 fell, won by the shaken horse)
• Andrea Coghe said Storm: 7 Palios run, 1 won, (1 not disputed)
• Sebastiano Murtas has Hail: 11 Palios run, none won
• Elias Mannucci said Turbine: 8 Palios run, none won
• Enrico Bruschelli said Looker: 7 Palios held, none won
• Federico Guglielmi aka Tamure: 3 Palios run, none won
• Mattia Chiavassa: rookie
• Gabriele Puligheddu: debutant

The report of the third test
of the Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024

Very calm horses inside the ropes also in the third test this evening under the orders of the mover Bartolo Ambrosione. The Giraffa run-up enters immediately, with the debutants Gabriele Puligheddu and Ardeglina, a valid move, even if with some forcing at the canape, and the starting point of Oca, Valdimontone and Bruco is excellent.

It is Valdimontone who passes in front of the first San Martino followed by Civetta and Leocorno. At the height of the Cappella di Palazzo Pubblico Civetta takes the lead and, with a good gallop time, stays in front until the second Casato when Criptha goes to touch the column.

Federico Guglielmi known as Tamurè at this point slows down and stops the horse with the Onda taking the lead at the end of the second lap.

At the end of a third lap, the Contrada dell’Onda is alone in command and, with Carlo Sanna known as Brigante su Tabacco, passes first to the flag, with the explosion of the firecracker which establishes the victory in the third round of the Palio di Siena of 2 July 2024.

Tomorrow morning, Monday 1st July at 9am, the race will take place fourth test with the entrance between the ropes which will be reversed compared to this evening: Giraffe, Wave, Unicorn, Nicchio, Wolf, Goose, Panther, Owl, Valdimontone and Bruco chasing.
